    Fort Bragg/Mendocino Diving

So true about it being a crap shoot this time of year. My best dives have been in October/ November. Last weekend looked like it was starting to clear up. It was still good enough What complicates my dive trips is the lodging. We rent a rustic cabin at odd times, reserved months in advance...

    Fort Bragg/Mendocino Diving

Dove Russian Gulch last weekend. The viz was so so, maybe 15-20ft, bu still fun to get deep out there. I talked with a lifeguard about the recent GW encounters. Evidently there were a couple dead whales, that were subsequently towed out to deeper water. So the GW's must have been cruising...

List sites that are urchin barrens

Inner VanDamme is nice, some kelp. I seems like the urchins are kept out by the outer reef. The outer, lots of urchins. I think after Caspar, VanDamme should be the next spot to target. Other Monterey Urchin barrens, right side of Camel River.

    Fort Bragg/Mendocino Diving

Too funny, I was up at Russian Gulch diving Oct 15th. Yeah, while getting ready, a lady I was talking to mentioned the GW's bumping the kayaks. Yeah, wasn't what I wanted to hear. I still dove. I hope the bubbles and the scooter noise scare them off. Right? I usually stick to the bottom with...

    Fort Bragg/Mendocino Diving

I get 20-40' sometimes. Then again, if it's been windy it can stir up stuff. I still need to dive out along the sewer pipe. I've always seemed to be there when it's a bit rough. Yes, outside VanDamme has some cool walls. And so does Russian Gulch. Using a DPV up there is the way to go as...

    Fort Bragg/Mendocino Diving

Yes, the wall outside of Keyhole Rock at Van Damme is on my list. With a DPV I can get out there from shore. While the diving up in Mendocino lacks the once abundant Kelp, there are still fish and lots of Urchins. Still the diving is cool. At Russian Gulch I find old Anchors, chain, driver's...

    Fort Bragg/Mendocino Diving

I dive up in Ft Bragg a couple times a year. Yes, I cram about 4-6 tanks in the car or have other carry as well. I prefer Russian Gulch for the ease of access. I dive with a DPV, which let's me get way, way out there. The DPV has opened up far greater ground that I can cover. It makes a huge...

    New DPV - Dive Xtras

Noted! Yeah, I would not want to find out the hard way 1/2 mile from the beach. Still, it was damn cool! I'm happy with an hour run time, after that it gets cold.

    New DPV - Dive Xtras

I am running the DeWalt 60V/20V 12AH batteries. I did an 80min dive and still had 2 bars on the batteries left running at 3 most of the time. So if doing normal 6omin dive, I could get in 2x dives at least. That's more than enough for a day in chilly Monterey, I figure, I might as well go big...
