    PADI Ice Diver Course

Hi folks, This might sound like an odd question, but please bear with me. Do the course materials for a PADI Ice Diver course include a student manual? Or is there only an instructor manual, with all theory being taught entirely through communication by the instructor (ie. verbal, whiteboard...

Help with E-M5 Mark III and strobes

Thanks for the ideas guys. Will try a few things out this weekend. My shots from last weekend were captured at 1/100 (the flash slow limit setting I had). Which is as per the description of that setting in the manual. I'll try shooting in the mirror to test the sync, but I'm pretty sure the...

Help with E-M5 Mark III and strobes

Thanks Wolfgang. I'll switch to completely manual, rather than aperture priority and have a play with all values fixed manually. Re #2, I thought the flash slow limit sets the minimum shutter speed when using the flash? So, for example, in Aperture Priority, if the camera wants to use a...

Help with E-M5 Mark III and strobes

Hi all, I recently bought an E-M5 Mark III and it's an amazing camera. But I'm having trouble getting it to work with my Sea & Sea YS-D2 strobes. Hoping someone can help. With the EM5iii in aperture priority, F8, ISO 200, flash slow limit set to 1/100 and the X-sync on the default 1/250, in...

    Epl10/octo housing review

That combo is (IMHO) a great camera and an amazingly affordable housing. Great BFYB, compared to an Oly OMD in a Nauticam housing. I very nearly bought it, but there are a few aspects you might want to consider. To avoid repeating myself, here's a link to where I have previously posted about...

    Macro with an EPL-9 / EPL-10?

My reply may be too late (Have you already decided? What did you choose?), but having used an E-PL5 with the 60mm macro lens for many years, I would say that for general underwater macro the TG-5 is a better shooter, despite the smaller sensor. A smaller sensor brings a crop factor that...

Olympus E-PL10 Underwater Camera & Housing Review

I very nearly bought this (well, the AOI version, not this rebranded one), but there are a few drawbacks people might want to be aware of. 1. Strobes are triggered by LEDs built into the housing (I think with a hot shoe connector to trigger the LEDs, which are powered by a battery internal to...

Seeking suggestions for "affordable" camera & housing purchase

Thanks all for your input. In the end I got a good deal on an EM5 III, and will pick up a Nauticam housing. It's still a lot of money for me, but any other equivalent option was going to be considerably more expensive. I did consider an EM1 II, but the extra size added cost to the housing and...

Image stabilisation underwater - yes or no?

I'm looking to buy a new camera and am tossing up between the Sony a6400 and a6600. One of the key feature differences is in-body image stabilisation on the a6600. For the a6400, its lens only, so a decision on whether to use it needs to be made before the dive. I've seen several discussions...

Seeking suggestions for "affordable" camera & housing purchase

Thanks for the great reply! I was just about to pull the trigger on the cheapest option, but will think further about the Nauticam housing...

Seeking suggestions for "affordable" camera & housing purchase

Hi all, For about 5 years I've had an entry-level interchangeable lens camera in the Olympus E-PL5 with factory housing. For a while the camera has been showing wear and tear (niggly issues, loose buttons, etc), and more recently it died rather suddenly when the housing flooded (I had...

Teric takes 2 mins to clear 1 min of deco

Yes, same. And of course I've had this same "problem" when I've done the classic mistake of switching gases and not switching my computer to the new gas, only to realise when my deco stop starts extending out longer than it should. I should have put two and two together over this latest...

Teric takes 2 mins to clear 1 min of deco

Thanks guys! Makes sense, and lesson learned. :thumb:

Teric takes 2 mins to clear 1 min of deco

Ah, so with the 60 mix "on", the deco would have been calculated assuming I was going to switch to that? But of course I didn't. That would make sense. Note to self - always turn off gases not in use.

Teric takes 2 mins to clear 1 min of deco

12 minutes when I reached the 6m stop. (13 when I left the bottom). I did have a 21, 32 and 60 mix "on", though wasn't carrying them. My only carried and active gas was 27%, and checking the logs shows it stayed on that the entire dive.

Teric takes 2 mins to clear 1 min of deco

Yesterday on a dive I had 12 minutes of deco to clear at 6m. Even though my buoyancy had me sticking bang on 6m the entire stop (give or take .3m either side), it took 24 minutes to clear that 12 minutes of deco. I suspect I've had similar issues with this computer before. I normally have my...

Help! Entirely black frames on EPL5

Thanks for the suggestion. I played around with the lens release button and couldn't reproduce the issue on land. I asked about repairs, and at $150/hr labour, plus parts, it's hardly worth it. I've now purchased a second hand E-PL5 off eBay (second hand, but never used; still in original...

Help! Entirely black frames on EPL5

I might try that anyway - a very long exposure and give it a whack during the shot. Though giving it a jarring impact underwater might be more difficult than on land.

Help! Entirely black frames on EPL5

Thanks - I found that after your first reply. It's possible that the shutter curtain is timing itself badly, but it's not getting stuck like in that link (there's a YouTube video that shows it too). The shutter does retract after each shot, and I can see through the LCD screen again. If the...
