    June 2019 Roll Call

Awesome first dive day in Cozumel. My buddy and I met up with fellow Scubaboarder Mouthbreather and his girlfriend when we boarded the charter. Our first meeting face to face after we both posted for June Roll call. Very cool! Thanks Scubaboard and members for the roll call and all the...

    Newfoundland in April

I will be in St. John’s for a few days mid April for work and hoping to get a couple dives in one day. Any suggestions? Are there any charters operating that early in the season? Any easy shore dives that don’t require a guide and if not any recommendations for guided shore dives?

Which agency should I join if I wish to become an Elite Diver?

Don’t get caught up in labels. What do you want out of diving, is really the question. Collecting badges is for Boy Scouts and since it isn’t an Olympic event, there are no medals for being the “best” diver, whatever that might look like. Not to be condescending but at your level focus on...

    Softening a nylon weight belt.

See if you can return your boiled belt and get yourself a rubber Marseillaise weight belt. Safer, more comfortable and no chance of the weights sliding to your front when in trim. I’ve recommended the switch to dive buddies and they still thank me to this day.

    Feeding Lionfish to Other Fish

I’ve seen them hunted and fed to lobsters by guides. If I start getting followed by lobster I’m doing it wrong and I should probably invest in a big mesh bag! ;)

People who bought a BP/W before trying one, were you happy with your decision?

Very happy (both times). I have 2 bp/w rigs from Deep Sea Supply, one for me and the other for my daughter. One has 250 dives and the other has 20. If I didn’t marker our initials on them I would be hard pressed to tell them apart. I mostly dive in cold water using a drysuit but I have also...

Bas is the Boss of Bonaire!

Just finished a fabulous week at Buddy Dive Resort Bonaire, sipping ice cold Polars on the patio, reflecting on 15 great dives and thought I better post before I have to go back home and reality takes over. I had scheduled a couple of guided dives with Bas Diving early in the week but a slight...

    Hawaii - Where to Begin

Big Island widely accepted as having the best diving. Just shore dive the whole west coast of the island from Mahukona to Miloli'i. Lots of info on various sites such as shorediving.com on all the best shore dives with maps and detailed information. Don't waste money on charters except for the...

5mm wetsuit that stays warm topside

Yes, I second getting a dry suit. Problem with wet suits is that they get wet. "a well-fitting tightly knit wool watch cap". In Canada we call that a toque.

Dive boat capsizes, spills 9 divers - Victoria Canada

What are you implying or how about what is your point? Something special about Maine? Other than that you have to go a helluva long way out to do "rec fishing". btw the whale watching boat that sank a few weeks ago was near Tofino, nowhere near the Race Rocks dive site.

    Sonora and Baja

I just got back from a week in Los Cabos (flew from Vancouver) and split my time between Cabo Pulmo and Cabo San Lucas. Did 11 amazing dives and water temps were 84 to 86 F. Great visibility and tons of schooling fish especially at Cabo Pulmo. I spoke with a few people at the resort who had...

Georgia man dead - Key Largo, Florida

Don't be too sensitive Dr. Mike. For an experienced diver being in a few feet of water wearing a hundred pounds of scuba gear may be no big deal ... Maybe. The For me the post is a bit of education that things can go wrong any where during a dive. Every time I read of one of these accidents...

    Anyone Dive Gordo Banks Lately?

Heading to Cabo in 2 weeks and I will be diving Cabo Pulmo and the Corridor and I'm wondering if Gordo Banks has been more "hit" than "miss"? I understand it is a relatively long boat ride for that part of the world and if there aren't any fish around there isn't much to look at. Rather than...

    Missing Britannia Beach Diver

My dive buddy and I were diving the cut at Whytecliff Park that morning when the coast guard hovercraft blew by us. It was slightly un-nerving and as we entered the water we both commented that hopefully they were just heading out on a training exercise. It was a gorgeous bright day but there...

Secondary dive sites near HMCS Annapolis?

Yes that looks about right. You might also want to check out this book. It has lots of dive sites and many that are only accessible by boat. I have seen it at Ocean Quest in Burnaby. Glen Dennison, Diving Howe Sound Reefs & Islands

Secondary dive sites near HMCS Annapolis?

How about Halkett Wall, Gambier Island? Checked my log book and I didit last year from the Sea Dragon Topline. If I recall it's outside Halkett Bay on the right side (southeast) as you approach from Horseshoe Bay. I think the entry was near a fairly distinct white coloured fissure in the...
