    Dive operators in Phuket

I just returned from a vacation trip to Phuket and had an opportunity to dive with 2 different operators- the first was Dive Asia, where we went to Racha Yai and Racha Noi. We did 3 dives at a very leisurely pace, with substantial amounts of food in-between dives, and intervals that were in the...

    South Pacific cruise diving

I came here with the very same questions. I am leaving on a cruise in 2 weeks from Sydney to Hawaii via Tahiti /Moorea/ Bora Bora. I booked with a co. called Top Dive that has ops on all 3 islands. I will give you a report on return. You are right there were no ship sponsored dive excursions for...

    Solo-Friendly Charters?

I haven't had any problem on any of the So. Cal. Boats, as long as the trip is an open boat. If it is a sponsored charter (like Sports Chalet or a dive shop), often they will require buddies. That requirement is usually specified on the sponsor's website.

How did I handle myself in this situation?

I noticed that you said that you completely emptied your BCD (I assume that was as you were beginning your descent). Remember that you are weighted to be negatively buoyant at the beginning of the dive (in order to compensate for the gas in your cylinder). If you completely empty your BCD then...

    Request for conditions around Avalon...

I was at the Isthmus (Ship rock, Bird Rock wall, and the Rock Quarry) Saturday (28th) and conditions were fantastic. Sun was out and water was mid-60's even at 60+ fsw. Virtually no current or surge. Vis 40 ft or so. Mostly flat, little wind at surface. I'd say best conditions of the year so...

    Double tanks

I must have the Faber's that are not very negative when empty, because they are a great set of doubles (LP85s). I also have double PST 120s, very nice set especially if you are tall.

    Where did you dive today?

Yesterday- Ship Rock and Isthmus reef, Catalina Island, California. Water temp- mid 60's, Vis- 20ft. Shot a nice video of a bat ray swimming by... ‪Bat Ray at Ship Rock Catalina Island‬‏ - YouTube

I just don't get it, do you?

I don't get it either. But what can you do- you even have SB staff trolling around flaming solo divers (Check out the other thread ("RIP solo diver")). -->

    What defines a "Deco" dive?

Agreed. This thread makes absolutely no sense standing on its own. But as a troll, it's still great fun to read!

    Around the neck?

You probably would not haul your deco cylinders into the wreck- rather, you would clip them to your line at the entry/exit point. If you are concerned about having them for redundancy, you are probably diving doubles in this situation with a buddy, so that gives you a couple of extra layers of...

    What's next after "Master" Diver?

I've been following your thread since your first posting, and I have read every post so far. I'm glad to see that you have the courage to push back against the crowd of nay-sayers that seem to assume that every diver is new and inexperienced (always much less experienced than they are). Even...

    Reg Service Turnaround Time?

I just sent mine into Tech Diving Limited, they were in the shop for two weeks. I believe they would have done them quicker if I'd had a trip scheduled. I bought them elsewhere, and that was not an issue. Everything is oxygen cleaned for the regular price, which I needed, and is the reason I...

LP vs HP tanks on doubles...

I was in the same situation as you, first set was double hp120's, and I find the best second set to be double lp85's. They make a good second set for a second deco dive when you've used the 120's for the first, longer dive. They also make a good set for general recreational use if you get tired...

    Topping off Tri-Mix with air

To me it seems like topping up a trimix fill with air is blending trimix. I agree from a practical standpoint a diver could add his O2 and He and go to the local shop to top with air (or add He and go to the shop to top with Nitrox), and he's already done the calculations so the mix will come...

    PADI Tec Instructor

Normaly I don't jump on the"get more experience first" bandwagon, because I think divers who want to "aim high," especially in pursuit of more advanced diving skills, ought to be encouraged rather than shot-down like is common here on SB. However, when you're talking about being an instructor...

    which drysuit?

My first drysuit was a Diving Concepts trilam, which happened to be all cordura outer layer. I had some problems with leaking, and as it was getting old, I recently replaced it with a DUI CLX450. It's a trilam but with a cordura outer layer. Some people favor the trilam because it's a little...

Do you think Nitrox is a deep diving gas?

Actually I believe most decompression chambers keep people at 2.8 ATA O2, and most have no problem. The difference there is, though, that if they have a seizure they won't drown. I don't think I'd have a problem going to 2.0 for a short while to help a buddy. The training agencies have to be...

    Bahamas Close Call Video

I believe that your computer tracks no stop time until you go into deco, and then it switches to show the total time to surface (deco obligation) in the main time display. That's why the time is increasing at video time 2:34 and 2:54. There are also smaller icons showing the next stop depth and...

Which tanks to bring to LA?

The only reason that I see to use doubles for shore diving is for training. So, if your primary diving is recreational and shore, I'd bring the 100's and split them- you get 2 dives per shore trip (1 each). If your primary diving is boat, I'd bring the 130s and leave them doubled-up. You can get...

    Flooded my Powershot SD750

I too got a little water in my housing and killed my Canon (SD600). The lesson I took from that was- for underwater photography, get the cheap used camera on eBay FIRST - then when you have the inevitable flood, you don't have to worry quite as much.
