Going to the Phiippines late April

Going to the Philippines in late April or early May. Intend to stay for 2 or 3 weeks. This will be my first trip to the Philippines and the more I research the more I'm confused. Accomodations can be simple. Would love to see large pelagics and healthy reefs. Macro is also cool. Will do a live...

LOB recommendations Similans for Single Female traveller

Check out A-1 diving out of Ranong. Significantly cheaper than the boats out of Khoa Lak and Phuket. Nice Boat. For an extra night you can get a nice motel room cheap (500 baht).

Diving in Koh Tao - advice needed please.

Yes you can swim (snorkel) to shark Bay but its a long swim, much easier to walk over the hill. If you decide to do your open water on Koh Tao check out Big Bubble in Chalok Baan Kow.

    Cannon G12 or S100?

For the past several years I have been using a Cannon A 570 and have been very pleased with it. I am by no means a professional photographer but I take a lot of pictures. I am thinking of upgrading and have been looking at the Cannon G12 and the S100. Any suggestions, pros and cons or advice...

Thailand is home to three of the top 50 dive sites in the world-CNN

How did this thread morph from "Best dive sites" into a discussion on "Guided diving?" I wish I could change the subject so effortlessly when my kids ask me for money :D

Thailand is home to three of the top 50 dive sites in the world-CNN

This has to be the most ridiculous top 50 lists ever created. Happy to see Thailand get recognition but the descriptions of Richlieu Rock and Elephant head , 2 wonderful sites, are completely inaccurate. Further the inclusion of Japanese Garden is just laughable. Most diver on Koh Tao take a...

    Where are the Leopard Sharks?

Ignorance is not exclusive to one country. It appears to be running rampant throughout the entire planet. Rich/poor, developed/undeveloped,educated/uneducated, it makes little difference.

Anyone been to Burma banks region lately?

Most companies prefer going to the Mergui archipelago rather then the Burma Banks. I did a trip 2 weeks ago. No sharks, mantas or whale sharks but an enjoyable trip nevertheless. Unlike the similans, you won't see another dive boat and you will see several species you won't find in Thailand...

    Where are the Leopard Sharks?

I have been diving the Similan Island for the past 10 years. Previously, I would see Leopard Sharks on every trip, however that has changed in the past 2 years. I have done 7 trips (5 last season and 2 this season) and have seen only 1 leopard shark. Sites where I usually found Leopard Sharks...

Thailand in August - Andaman or Gulf? (or: Is Koh Tao really that bad?)

I have been diving Thailand for 10 years. It is true the Andaman side has better diving but KT gets a bad rap (mostly from people on the west coast). The similans is the best diving in the andaman and they are closed in August. KT will be a safer choice in August. As far as the Island is...

    Rainwatch 2011

The rain has finally stopped here in Ranong but the sun has not made an appearance. Crossing my fingers that we have turned the corner. Still touch and go. My thoughts are with you folks over on Koh Tao.

    Rainwatch 2011

Was on a liveaboard to the Surins on 28/3/11 and had to head for home rather than dive at Richilieu rock because of the storm. Weather has been crazy here all year and now with all this rain and wind this time of year it's particularly unusual. Did anyone say: "Climate change?"

    Andaman Closures?

Selective closings would appear to be more appropriate than closing down the entire park. I have observed some sever bleaching but as mentioned mostly in the shallower sites. Most areas appeared unaffected or sustained minimal damage. If they decide to close the parks it would be another...
