    Question SCUBA, the self-policing industry

Yes, the Florida state parks for instance heavily regulate scuba diving - whether it’s permitted at all, and (if so) what certifications are required. For instance, many state parks legally require you to have a cavern or cave cert. Solo diving is not permitted, and DPVs are not permitted...

Recommend me a trip as a new diver

I second the recommendations for CoCoView in Roatan for a new diver! It’s a week of doing four dives a day, but with a lot of handholding (if you want it) and structure. Great dives - almost all wall dives, with a wreck or two thrown on. Generally you’ll go deeper (60’-80’) along the wall on the...

Looking for a buddy this coming weekend for Rainbow River, Crystal River, etc.

Let us know where you end up going and how it goes!

    Conditions…

Everything on the Suwannee is flooded right now - Madison, Telford, Peacock, Little River, etc. etc. The one exception is Manatee, which I believe is still clear. It’s going to be a few days still before the river crests and finally starts to drop again. This is a normal part of the river...

Any Tampa Bay Instructors Interested in Doing an AOW Class?

You might contact Spring Run Diving (independent PADI instructor) up in Gainesville; I think they usually do AOW in the ocean.

Looking for a buddy this coming weekend for Rainbow River, Crystal River, etc.

Hey there, the Florida dive scene is mostly centered around FB. Not sure about Tampa area clubs, but if you are looking for a buddy for Rainbow try the Florida Springs Dive Club or Scuba Monkey Dive Club groups on Facebook. Both do monthly club dives in the springs, but neither have one...

I have…I’m one of those dozen lol!

Question re: minimum air volume when decompression diving

I dive (privately) on double 50s on deep deco dives; my SAC rate is low enough (< .30) that they give plenty of bottom time plus reserve, even on thirds. That said, I’ve used LP85s for all my classes. If nothing else, doing so gives us more “class time” underwater, and allows for proper gas...

    Conditions…

Yep, they’re all waaaay under…like “water in the parking lot” under. It’s gonna be a while before anything on the Suwannee clears up. I hear Buford is clear, which means there’s a good chance Eagle’s Nest is, too, I suppose.

Question Doing a liveaboard out of NAS cat ppalu 4/20-26/24. Wetsuit mm rec?

I run cold, but last year I wore a 5mm on a Bahamas liveaboard that time of year in April, and a 7mm on the night dives. For comparison, of my three buddies, the first wore a 3mm, the second wore a bikini, and the third alternated between a 5mm or just tech shorts.

What dive shop to rent from?

EE is more geared towards backmount, but we've rented sidemount tanks from them before. (You may need to ask or call; I don't think they're listed on their online rental reservation system)

Dive buddy wanted - Ginnie Springs, Thursday May 23, 2024

You may have more luck asking on one of the local dive clubs on Facebook - try Florida Springs Dive Club or Scuba Monkey Dive Club.

    Any reason to avoid scuba.com?

They said they don’t have a local LDS that sells them, thus asking about the online option.

    Any reason to avoid scuba.com?

Great reputable site, with good customer service; most of my online orders are with them and DGX.

    Underwater Photography Gear (Beginner)

An Olympus TG6/TG7 in a housing is perfect for this; focus on getting your buoyancy and diving skills down, and the Olympus will keep you occupied for several years. You’ll know when you’ve outgrown it, and are limited by your camera (rather than your diving or photography skills). I also can’t...

Robert “Doc” Adelman aka Roatan Man

Ah, this is sad…I met him on my first trip to CCV, and he was incredibly kind. I was traveling with my father, who was having trouble diving (we found out later he was having micro seizures). I’ll never forget surfacing from a drop-off dive one day, and Doc running up to greet me saying, “We saw...

There is a small GoFundMe campaign to help his family cover funeral expenses. EDIT: See post below by kensuf - if folks would like to donate, consider DAN or North Florida Springs Alliance.

Do you have a tech reg and a rec reg setup?

I have separate regs; swapping multiple times a week would get old real fast.

When to change Oceanic Geo 2.0 battery

I would replace it before the trip; I find my Oceanic Geo 2 needs a new battery about once a year, regardless of use. You could just bring a spare but (as you note) it will NOT save your data between battery changes…
