    Smoking on a dive boat

Its true most smokers are pretty considerate these days. Sadly in most situations it only takes one or two people who are not, for that not to matter so much - and those guys can always be counted upon to be around. Negotiating these things is met with very different attitudes by different...

    Smoking on a dive boat

yeah. youre right. Its like the automatic response now to any undesirable aspect of life is to tighten rules, tighten control, assign blame and just generally restrain living space to prevent the odd, unavoidable accidents of life. Its like forced safety, its getting so neurotic. No bumps in the...

    Smoking on a dive boat

Its really just that it seemed to be the natural way of things, and it was so widely accepted that it was just a high wall to climb every time seeing as at least half the people around, sometimes more would feel that this was just their right. As a kid certainly you had no real voice in the...

    Smoking on a dive boat

I agree in the western part of the usually you can speak to people about these things, but this is only because the norms have been challenged and attitudes changed. The first half of my life that was certainly not the case, and the majority of smokers would smoke whenever and whereever they...

    Smoking on a dive boat

I see no point in defending myself against your standard application of tired cliches. I have nothing on the smokers, which you'd notice if you properly read my post, I just dont like the smoke, and no amount of "designated" is really gonna change that is it now? Like I said, smoke away, but own...

    Smoking on a dive boat

There just is no reliable "downwind". Whats downwind at one moment is upwind the next when you're at sea. Pendling I see people trying to stand "downwind" all the time at bus stops and train stations. They're wind tunnels, circulating air. Half the smokers dont even think about wind they just...

    Smoking on a dive boat

I dunno man - last time I went to sharm on a boat like that, acting as a tour guide for a group of divers who rented the boat, the swedish DM doing internship or whatever would prance around smoking on the rear deck while people were kitting up, just hanging out you know, not really helping out...

    Things That Almost Bit You

LOL, good stuff. Btw - heres an observation on mantis shrimp spotting on coral reefs that has served me really well. When they dodge and scoot back into their hole, immediately start scrutinizing the surrounding reef within a radius of about half a metre. Often you'll find them studying you...

    Smoking on a dive boat

Its a little hard to explain but maybe not such a mystery. I just used to think of it as just "closing my nose" but found that noone had any idea what I was talking about. Anyway I kinda lift or tense the muscles at the back of the roof of my mouth, much like you'd do naturally when you are...

    Smoking on a dive boat

Well - I guess could go along with "severely affecting" sounding a little too much like a medical emergency, however, at least to me its a little more than just stinky and annoying. I remember as a kid, sitting in the back seat with adult smokers driving the car. I was living in the north mind...

    Smoking on a dive boat

I think smoking on a boat is bloody annoying, it adds to all the other things that might make you queasy, and I honestly find even the smell of farts more agreeable. Anyway my favourite dive haunts are remote places in Asia, and sometimes Egypt, and while there seem to be a general unspoken...

Will changes in water density affect perceived object magnification?

I think my brain is habituated about now ;0) Based on personal experience, I'm not so sure I agree that increased salinity has similar effects as turbidity, seeing as the salt is dissolved. Egypt and Dubai are probably the saltiest waters I've dived, and also among the ones with the best viz...

Left or Right Wrist for Computer?

Yeah thats exactly my point. I remember one time I was diving with a friend who'd brought a big new video cam on a deep dive with quite a lot of current. This was an experienced diver - yet we had to separate from the group because working the cam in heavy current on a tank that had been at...

Will changes in water density affect perceived object magnification?

Seawater is denser than freshwater due to the salt content. Fresh water has a density of 1000 kg/cubic meter vs. an average density of 1027 kg/cubic meter for ocean salt water. Which fits your estimate anyway so in essence what youre sayin makes sense.

Left or Right Wrist for Computer?

Well - like you I never got into the transmission thing. Its probably stupid but I just don't feel right trusting air monitoring to a digital medium. For regular scuba diving I don't much like consoles, but thats just personal preference. I find them hard to check if you are working in close...
