    Diving off Savannah

Hi: You might want to try Island Dive Center on St. Simons Island at (912) 638-6590. They run dives out to the Liberty ship wrecks. The wrecks are located 30 miles off the coast, and were sunk 30+ years ago as artificial reefs. Are totally encrusted and have a lot of fish life, and some...

    Georgia Dive Show !!!!!

Missed this thread, and missed you all, even though we were there from 3:30 to closing on Saturday. I think I was switched at birth -- somewhere there's a trust fund waiting for me so that I can go to all the wonderful places that were exhibiting. Eventually we'll get to Lembeh or Wakitobi...

Taiwan to ban whale shark trade in 2008

Good news! Taiwan will ban the catching of all whale sharks for any purpose in 2008. From the Atlanta Journal-Constitution: Taiwan will ban the harvest and sale of whale sharks beginning in 2008, a decision that could have repercussions at the Georgia Aquarium and other facilities where the...

Coco View/Roatan - what an awesome place

I have to admit that I really HATE bugs, and this is the only objection I had to Roatan. Cactus Juice did help a lot with the no-seeums, but I was still chewed on. We stayed at CocoView in May 2005. Good dives, good food, dive op was well run. We got to meet some great people. I would...

Another whale shark dies in captivity

A 12-13 year old female, this time in Osaka, Japan. Popular whale shark dies mysteriously Very sad. The Georgia Aquarium in Atlanta lost a male whale shark in January -- you can read my rant about the aquarium getting 2 more males in Whine and Cheeze: Georgia Aquarium to get 2 more...

What is the proper way to flush your wetsuit after you pee?

No, you're not paranoid. It has happened to me, flushed near a patch of eel grass that also had a lot of hydroids. Apparently sucked in some loose ones (larva, maybe) with the flush, and really rued it.:shakehead I don't think it's the pee that makes the suits smell so bad, it's the microbes...

California Beach Diver looking to relocate

Also check out the New England Lobstah Divahs forum -- I'm pretty sure the hardier souls can shore dive year round there. However, the cost of living may not be what you want. For the Gulf Coast and lower Atlantic states, it's mainly sand or mud for shore diving, with the exception of jetties...

Does this look familiar to anyone??

My husband's parents live north of Cincinnati, so we normally fly into Dayton when visiting, and usually have a few fine phrases for that monstrosity each time we pass it. I like the "Swamp Thing Jesus" moniker. I think we might have to borrow it, since it looks like he's sinking and needs to be...

very quick trip for some experience

Does anyone know if Hobo's relocated, or is it truly gone? That was one of my favorites, and Key Largo has a lot of good restaurants! EDIT: Found the answer -- Hobo's is at a new location around MM 101-102 ocean side. Fantastic!

    British Virgin Islands Trip Report

We've bareboated sailboats several times in the BVIs over the last few years, and have really enjoyed the diving and sailing there. I've never noticed an attitude problem with the locals, but then again I rarely set foot on land once I'm on the boat. The wait staff at the few restaurants we go...

very quick trip for some experience

I'll second the Keys, but I drive. Since you don't drive, I guess you need to check out transport between the Miami airport and Key Largo. I have also dove with Horizon and stayed at the Ramada next door. This could be one possibility -- I wouldn't let the size of the op scare you away; there...

    Diving the Keys

Nobody told him about Goliath Groupers big as a VW bug... Seriously, I've dove in the Keys several times over the past five years and have seen nurse sharks, squadrons of barracudas, and once a 2 foot hammerhead that turned around as soon as it saw the two bubbling monsters that were pointing...

    New Year's Day Dive 2007

It sounded like you all had a wonderful time. I, too, was up at Lake Lanier, but observing the surface from the deck of our sailboat in our sailing club's annual Poker Run. I did come close to joining you only when I nearly fell in lifting a card off the mark. You all are very hardy souls, and...

    Cabo San Lucas... Been there?

I was also at Cantamar in October (21 - 29). Buffa's right, you get your drinking water from coolers located outside the rooms, and keep it in a pitcher on the bathroom counter. But my understanding is that's the way it is in Mexico. Our building ran out of water for about 15 minutes one day...

    wanted Canon 20D housing

Here's a link to a complete package of 20D and an Ikelite housing, but the seller is willing to sell it without the camera. Canon 20D Ikelite housing

    Gear bag for 2

We have a Scuba Armor XL Backpack with wheels, which we like a lot. Fits two sets of split fins, BCDs, wet suits, masks, boots, and spares without any trouble. Watch your weight limits, though. We also use the Armor double reg bag as a carry on. It fits nicely into overhead bins, and is large...

Need help to ID this fish

Out on a limb here, but perhaps a juvenile Whitespotted Soapfish Rypticus maculatus? That's the only fish I've seen in the Caribbean/Atlantic with that prominent white face stripe. Soapfishes are members of the sea bass family.

    Lockup at 15+ Meters PT-023 C-8080

I think the camera is not seated in the housing correctly, a problem which gets exacerbated at depth. I'm not sure about the setup with your 8080 and PT-023, but I started having a similar problem with my 5050 in the Ikelite housing. I couldn't turn the camera on at depth -- the lens would come...

    Why Don't You Dive?

Some people like diving just for the sake of diving. I see it differently: I don't dive for the same reason I do dive and that is the opportunity to see LOTS of critters and take photos. For that reason my local quarry and local pea-green lake hold no interest for me. Sure the lake has bass...
