Glad to hear henderson is still highly regarded. Mine has lasted about fifteen years. Time to replace it. I'll definitely have a look. Thanks for your response.
Please let's not have the usual gang of "get a drysuit" responses because I already have one, as well as a semi-dry, 5mm and 3mm. I generally don't like diving dry except when either the water is really cold |(sub 50 F) or when the air temperature is cold. Those are my only two criteria for ever...
Just curious if there is any kind of a market for older video gear. I bought this in the early 1990's when it state of the art. Its a Sony V-701 Hi8 with an Amphibco u/w with the expensive domed lens. The camera still works but the batteries are dead. It hasn't been used for years so I'd sell it...
I bought this in the early 1990's when it was state of the art. It hasn't been used for years. It took excellent quality video, I think at least as good as my Go-Pro. The camcorder still works although the batteries are dead. Its a top of the line Sony V-710 Hi-8 in its day with a Amphibco u/w...
Completely. I worked my way through college in the 1970's by working summers and part time during the school year. When I graduated my student loan was only $3000. If I remember right, tuition was only about $800. per semester and a typical student wage was about $2.00 - 2.50/hr. I always had...
I agree 100% and I'm 65 this year. It amazes me how totally clued out some of my fellow boomers are when it comes to understanding how much harder it is for kids now than it was 40 yrs ago.
In another life many years ago I raced sports cars at the club level. Racing is another one of those things you can make a small fortune in just as long as you start off with a very large fortune. At least scuba diving is for the most part still affordable to the masses. Racing costs are now out...
Done a fair amount of wreck diving but have absolutely zero interest in diving in caves. Most wreck penetration dives I've done have near by escape routes. Not the usually the same for caves.
I have one on my Halcyon system along with the shoulder pads. Do I really need it, probably not, but it does look a lot nicer.
My wife on the other hand has a surgical steel Harrington rod for scoliosis running through much of her spine which she received at age 12. She prefers to wear a soft...
What motivated me as a young guy was the old Jacques Cousteau TV show in the 1970's. Used to watch it any time it was on. And then "Jaws" came out and that motivated me even more to learn about scuba. I got both my kids into scuba diving as teenagers with junior certs but neither of them are...
But they could also call triathlon an "old man's sport" since the biggest age groups are 40-45 and 45-50. Also triathlon isn't just iron man length. About 100,000 people have done IM so its not exclusive any more as you say, but a lot more people do the local area sprint triathlons than have...
There is an interesting parallel discussion going on one of the main triathlon forums as to why triathlon participation is dropping. In fact its down about 30% in some areas in just a few years. It appears once again the millenials aren't entering the sport in large numbers. I did triathlons for...
I think most instructors tend to over weight their students. Its easier to deal with an over weight newbie by adding a bit of air to the BC than is is to deal with an under weighted student.
Wow. Its way off for some of you guys. I lot depends whether a body is muscle or adipose when weighting. As I'm 5'9" 145 lbs it would be obvious I'm pretty lean and not as many variables if I was 250 lbs for example.
Very surprised but just tried this calculator and it is pretty well bang on for me. I have 3 mm, 5 mm, 7mm (one and two piece) wet suits and a dry suit. I punched in the numbers and the calculator came up either right on or very close for me in both fresh and salt water.
Give it a try and does...
I think most instructors do it more for the love than the money. I never got my full instructor ticket because I noticed that once people did they usually weren't diving for themselves any more. I enjoyed my time as a boat captain, DM and assisting with classes both in the pool and OW, but it...
Twenty years ago I was offered $1500. per month not including tips but besides being an instructor, duties included DM and boat captain since I was experienced with boats. This also included a free room at the resort. I never took the job.
A friend of mine walked into an operation in the Cayman...
Its the biggest island in the Caribbean so there are plenty of good dive spots and places to go if you know your way around. Also some that aren't so great. Sounds like you were at one of the tourist traps?
Night diving is an amazing experience. We used to night drift dive in the St. Lawrence River regularly - double your fun drifting at night. It was an absolute blast. A boat would follow above and follow our lights. Every dive was different and you just rode the currents down the river. Also did...
