Amira liveaboard trip report for Raja Ampat- from a macro lover’s perspective

Here is another one of my favorite shots from the trip.

Amira liveaboard trip report for Raja Ampat- from a macro lover’s perspective

Here is the final list of our sites. I got to name two of them, Cuttlefish corner, and Alice in Wonderland. (I suggested the name “Wonderland” because the reef there was so stunning. It was truly magical.)

Amira liveaboard trip report for Raja Ampat- from a macro lover’s perspective

Very very true. While I loved the Amira, their rotating guide policy wasn’t great for us and our style of diving. We always get private guides on land based excursions, also. For the Liveaboard it was not practical, though. I can’t believe I forgot to mention the megafauna! Jet lag brain. We...

Amira liveaboard trip report for Raja Ampat- from a macro lover’s perspective

Misool to Halmahera TL;DR: Raja Ampat and Halmahera were surprisingly macro rich environments with stunning landscapes. I didn’t bring my OM-1 and macro lens at the suggestion of multiple photographers, and I found myself regretting that decision. You can make a Raja Ampat trip a macro...

    Liveaboard "Go Bag"

So, basically my thought is: if we had an emergency situation where we had to abandon ship, but aren’t literally left floating in open water. (At that point, whatever. Let the sharks take me.) 🦈 I met a girl who was on the Galapagos boat that sunk. They ended up in a life raft for something...

    Belize Aggressor IV mooring breaks

Wow! And we thought our trip to Huracan (also on Long Caye) was rough. Holy cow. Belize is the gift that keeps on giving. I’m so sad to hear about the reef, and I’m sorry for your experience.

    Liveaboard "Go Bag"

Very good thought on car keys, I would not have thought of that!

    Liveaboard "Go Bag"

What do you put in your "go bag." We are thinking: passports, cash, one cell phone and maybe even a battery bank and charger just in case. Cell phones have satellite based SOS but we are also thinking PLB1 in our dry bag. What are we missing?

    Raja Ampat diver death

We will be on Amira, per @Dan's recommendations.

    Raja Ampat diver death

The discussion in the other thread was very helpful. I think we are still a bit conflicted, though, since it sounds like Steve’s buddy actually survived BY kicking off the wall. Do we know how deep Steve’s computer read? How his dive profile ended up reading? It also makes me wonder if the...

    Raja Ampat diver death

I feel like this needs to be discussed more. We are planning our Raja trip in early Feb and I’m thoroughly conflicted on what the best course of action is.

Head to head with the 60mm vs 90mm on the OM-1

I wanted to share head to head shots of my favorite South Florida subject: Janolus flavoanulatus. I am including the edits and the originals for apples to apples comparison. Also, feedback and critiques is always welcome. We are both partially color blind, so if anything appears to be overdone...

AOI OM-1 and the Olympus 90 Macro

I thought I'd chime in with my experience, since I'm also using the AOI housing with OM-1 and 90mm. I'm using the new dedicated 90mm port. I was the first person to order it from backscatter. The good: Bokeh is stunning. I've also shot with the 60mm with the CMC-1 and it is fairly comparable in...

    Camera decision for Amira liveaboard

This may seem like a crazy question, but… we have a trip on Amira planned for Raja Ampat in February. I upgraded to the OM-1 three months ago, but I am only set up for macro/supermacro. I only have the 90mm lens at this point. I have also only ever used the camera at the Blue Heron Bridge, a...

    TG-6 to MFT Setup

I actually have it but I feel like that is cheating a bit. I did use it on the third shot on my instagram. I tend to use it when it is a very rare critter that is in a less than ideal position, so I can’t get super close.

    TG-6 to MFT Setup

I definitely expect a steep learning curve. I can't justify the additional expense of the 60mm with the port knowing I want the 90mm, though. I am hoping, because I've been experimenting a lot with a diopter and wider aperture for lower depth of field, that I will have a bit of a jump on the...

    TG-6 to MFT Setup

I'll be the first to admit: I am not great with grasping the camera stuff. I learn enough to figure out my settings and then forget most of what I learned. So please keep it somewhat simple. I am a supermacro shooter. I've gotten some stellar results with the TG-6 but I know I could get better...

Warm water bibbed hood to protect against jellies

I haven’t had luck with Lycra baclavas, unfortunately. They move too much in the water and will get the microscopic stingers stuck inside them, creating more stings.
