Baja Cortez 19 August with Hilary

We did Socorro just over a year ago right after a tropical storm. Our pre-trip Cabo diving was cancelled, they delayed the departure, and the crossing was not fun -- about half the boat wasn't able to leave their cabins until we reached the islands. The diving was good once we got there...

Galapagos trip Aug 2023 -- will i freeze to death?

We were on the Humboldt Explorer, so we didn’t do either of those locations. Our final 2 dives were at Cousin‘s Rock. Water temps there were in the 73-75 range, which felt a bit chilly after being in 80+ during our time at Darwin and Wolf. Ended up getting skunked on whale sharks, which was a...

Galapagos trip Aug 2023 -- will i freeze to death?

@tom084 a quick “real time” update here for you as I know how nervous I can be about being cold on dives (let alone such a special trip like the Galapagos). We did two dives yesterday at Baltra and my Mares Puck Pro showed 73-75 (this is the same computer I used in Cocos and Socorro for what...

Galapagos trip Aug 2023 -- will i freeze to death?

Hi @tom084. We're headed to the Galapagos next week, have already done both Cocos and Socorro, and have been thinking through some of the same concerns. In Cocos (August 2019) we saw water temps as low as 72 beneath the thermoclines and as high as 82 at the surface. I wore a new 5mm Bare...

Trip Report Little Cayman Feb 2023

My wife and I were just at SCC in late June. We’ve done three trips to LCBR (last one was January 2018, but reviews I’ve read since then suggest it’s pretty much unchanged). I think it depends on what you care about and how much the cost differential means to you. The differences we noticed...

    Cayman Air - How strict

We flew GC-LC on Monday and they weighed everything, including hand luggage, but only charged our weight overage based on the checked items. They didn't size our hand luggage but upon boarding the captain was adamant that it need to be completely underneath the seat in front of you.

GUADALUPE 2021 GREAT WHITE SHARK DIVING SEASON - CONTINUED CLOSURE

Two short clips, both posted on Dropbox, if you're curious: (1) Using the boat as cover before rushing the bait (The file is called "Clever Girl" -- but that's just a Jurassic Park reference. The shark in the video is a male.) (2) Rocketing nearly straight up from the depths

GUADALUPE 2021 GREAT WHITE SHARK DIVING SEASON - CONTINUED CLOSURE

Nice video. We were there in August 2018. Looks like you had some wonderful sun to make for some good footage. Did you get to see any go straight up from deep to "surprise" the wrangler? That plus seeing them use the ship to conceal their strike was super interesting. I also don’t recall the...

Ah, that makes sense. They could have passed a hat for contributions!

    Revillagigedos storm

Yeah, probably. Would have been a bit of a pain since you'd need to make sure none of the switcheroos increased congestion among other groups. I guess I just felt like it was something that the crew should/could have done proactively. On the days when our group wasn't first to go out I would...

    Revillagigedos storm

The dive stations are really cramped and makes gearing up challenging if you have multiple people from the same group in a row. Six of our group were in the same row, which was annoying -- especially when doing it 4 times a day. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend the Belle Amie for the Guadalupe...

    Revillagigedos storm

Just a quick-ish follow up on this until I get around to writing a proper report/review. As I understand it, the typical plan for these trips is to depart Cabo in the evening for the journey to the islands, which takes around 24 hours. We ended up leaving around 9 am the following day -- after...

    Revillagigedos storm

Ditto as we’ll be on it! Just checked in with Nautilus before lunchtime and my understanding of the plan is to head to Sea of Cortez for first day and then head out to Socorro, so we’ll lose a day relative to the normal itinerary of arriving there tomorrow night.

    Pre Entry Website??

We were there last month and forgot to do this before arriving. It was no big deal, so I'd just throw in the towel. I think we had to show our vaccine cards when checking in for our first flight out of DTW. We also didn't do the pre-departure form before leaving for the airport and that was no...

    Guadalupe White Sharks With Nautilus

I went in summer 2018 on the same ship. It was a top notch experience on all fronts and one that I’ll be repeating next summer on the Socorro/Guadalupe combo cruise. I don’t recall any special process for the visas since you’re just entering Mexico, but I’d send that question directly to...

    Waterproof W4 vs. Bare Reactive/Velocity - 5mm

Big fan of the Bare Reactive 5mm. Am just finishing up a trip on Roatan right now and have been doing 4 dives a day most days. Easy on and easy off even to the point that I’ll take it off for a short 30 minute surface interval just so I’m not sitting in a suit. Correspondingly, it’s easy to put...

Cozumel - any experience staying at Residencias Reef?

We’ve stayed at RR since we started going to Coz about 5 or so years ago. The secrets pier is a few minutes walk and all the major ops pick up there. We dive with Aldora and they take care of the wristbands. We also see Dive With Martin there pretty much every day. We like RR because it means...
