    Corrugated Hose Adhesive?

I see residue from some type of adhesive used between the corrugated hose and the elbow-assembly attachment point. What kind of adhesive is that? Looking for specific type and/or brand info, and any tips on how to apply it. Thanks.

Are zipties used for diving gear just regular zip ties?

Harbor Freight Tools sells Velcro in rolls. It’s the type with hooks on one side, and fuzz on the other, so it’s perfect for securing hoses, and lots of other things. You can cut it to any length or width. Holds up very well in salt water. I love the stuff. .

Easiest U-boat to dive in the Eastern coast?

There’s also the UB-88 off Huntington Beach, California. It’s a WWI combat sub with several kills to its credit. How it ended up off California is an interesting story, and easily found online. In short, it was surrendered to the allies after the war, and finally sunk by the US Navy with...

    Painting fins

Once you find a good paint, I suggest you also write your phone number on your fins, along with your initials. We find fins lost off our local beach diving sites. The ones with phone numbers are usually reunited with their owners. The fins with just initials are not. .

    Advice on Wing/BP brands

Because there are circumstances when you may have to take off or put on your BP/W in the water, you need to choose a wing with sufficient lift to prevent your rig from sinking (after ditchable weights are removed). Personally, when using AL and smaller capacity ST cylinders, I use a 24 lb wing...

    Nitrogen narcosis

An almost identical experience occurred to me on a 120 fsw wreck dive off our local coast. We were making a dive at a place and depth I’d done many times before. On this particular dive, at about 110 fsw, I was feeling fine, but when I looked at my computer it didn’t make any sense to me...

    Contacts vs Prescription lens?

I blame my father. He had terrible eyesight. Prescriptiondivemasks of La Mesa CA has been my lens provider for about twenty years. I’ve always been happy with the product and service. They’ve also responded excellently when I’ve had problems or questions. I also have two masks by SeaVision...

What's your knife preference for diving. a.k.a. show off your knives.

In my local dive environment kelp is abundant. Abandoned fishing nets and monofilament fishing line festoon the wrecks. I believe a knife is an essential safety tool. I carry one knife, and a second line cutting tool, on every dive. My knife philosophy is constantly evolving. Here’s my...

    Heat exhaustion isn't fun

I've had similar experiences. It sucks, Some things that work for me: If your'e going to wear a neoprene hood, get it wet before you put it on. Very wet. It'll keep you cool long enough for the final steps of gearing up and splash. If I'm doing a shore dive that requires walking, I wear a...

    Who is still diving?

I've made only three shore dives since the virus hit. But it's not the virus that's stopping me. It's the surgeon who keeps cutting into me. I'll be free and healed by the end of the month, then... I'll be back.

Safety? Bare Feet or Dive Boots on Liveaboard Decks?

After witnessing a diver slip and take a spectacular fall on a dock a few years ago, I swore to always dive with good quality dive boots with robust high-traction soles. So, far I've kept my promise. But now I'm starting to rethink that when it comes to liveaboards. If bare feet are as safe on...

    Probably stupid question

Another factor in determining wing size: You need a wing with enough positive buoyancy when inflated to keep your system afloat. with you not in it. with a full cylinder. without ditchable weights. For some reason you need to remove your system in the water? This could be to return to a boat...

    Dive slate materials

DIY dive slates are light years ahead of the junk they sell in the dive shops. I've been making my own slates for years. I'm always subconsciously on the lookout for raw materials. The opaque white plastic from laundry detergent bottles, and food packaging works for small slates. Also sections...

Found a great way to stitch the heaviest of nylon webbing for cheap

This is a revelation! Great discovery Mr Texasguy. I put together custom backplate harnesses for my friends and myself. I'm pathetic at sewing, and stab myself constantly with my sailmaker's awl. A local shoe repairman will box-stitch webbing for me, but at $25 a shot. I hear him mutter...

    Retractor

I avoid anything with springs. Springs, saltwater, and sand are not compatible long term. (Folding knifes, retractors, bolt snaps, snap links, etc... all bad) I'm a fan of stainless steel quick links for attaching gear. For very reasonable prices Strapworks.com will make custom webbing straps...
