Another old Diver checking out what's going on

Three old divers on computer, sounds like the start of a joke :-) How well I remember Captain Bill and the Tropic Isle Dive Shop and outgasing in the Tiki Hut next door. I remember the Cat House too :-) Still pursing my Dive Master certification. If no one will hire me I might as well dive!

How to Pick the Best Liveaboard for Your Next Dive Vacation

All things considered, one of the best vacations I have ever had was two weeks on a 64 ft. flush deck Ketch. We left From Miami and sailed in and around the Bahamas. Find a likely spot, fill the tanks and over the side you go. All you have to do is keep track of your residual N2 for the next...

    Why We Dive

Yes, but after 100 dives (assisting with training) it gets pretty boring. With inland lakes and quarry's the water is brown, the fish are brown, the bottom is brown. My first dive on Pennekamp Park was like what taking LSD must be like. Colors everywhere! Also warm enough to shed the wetsuit...

    Why We Dive

Why? I started diving because my girlfriend at the time was certified because there was nothing else to do on the Pacific Atoll her Father was stationed on. She went back to school, I learned how to dive so we would have something to do the next summer. She left me then, but that was OK because...

    First ocean dive...advice?

Good for you! Pennecamp Park was my first dive in the Atlantic and changed my life forever, No more wetsuits! Don't bleed (attracts sharks), Don't wear anything shiny (attracts barracuda). Both will be in the vicinity hoping to be fed or just satisfy their inquisitiveness. Don't worry, be happy...

Question for old timers - NAUI OW class, early 1970s

I had narcosis at 105 ft. in a Blue hole in Florida. That was why our Instructor took us there. So it would happen again on the Big O. Trimix would make the dive much more enjoyable.

How many people love Vintage Equipment Diving ?

I started out on US Divers stuff (Mask, regulator, etc), used Scubapro most often, but since the best engineers moved to Atomics I am a big fan of them and don't trust vintage stuff anymore. My first Instructor told me to buy my equipment like my life depended on it, because it does. Technology...

    Location of Sharks' teeth

Any beach is likely to have them. All you have to do is sift a lot of sand or go deeper than your competitors. Sanibel Island in Florida seems to catch a lot of stuff, plus it is warm and sunny most often.

    Things you've found under water

Most of the stuff I have found the Government would not be interested in. So, fishing lures Countless Beer bottles and what was left of the cans cheap Sunglasses a Cheap Diamond Engagement Ring (probably not real diamond) A rusty nail (resulting in a tetanus shot) Hours and hours of fun.

Question for old timers - NAUI OW class, early 1970s

At my age DCS is easy to get, so I would prefer to eliminate it altogether, hence, Trimix. Thanks.

Question for old timers - NAUI OW class, early 1970s

Once upon a time (late 1970's. Jacques Cousteau was middle aged), I took a NAUI Basic course at a suburban Chicago college. During the doff and don in a 10 ft pool the Instructor was on the bottom watching us equip ourselves. We had to give him the OK sign when we thought we were done, followed...

Question for old timers - NAUI OW class, early 1970s

Since you are a Technical Instructor, can you recommend another Tech Diving Instructor in NC? Having a picture of me standing on the Flight Deck of the USS Oriskany (off shore Pensacola, FL) is on my bucket list and will require Trimix because of the depth (145 fsw).

Question for old timers - NAUI OW class, early 1970s

The typical pool is 10 ft deep. Even a full breath of compressed air will only stretch the lungs and not cause a fatal embolism without a pre-existing condition that should have been a contraindication for Scuba Diving. While a bad practice that should be discouraged it should not be fatal in a...

Question for old timers - NAUI OW class, early 1970s

In a pool? Even 10 ft on a full breath of Compressed Air will not cause DCS unless the lungs are weak to begin with. That should have been discovered in the medical exam prior to starting the course.

Question for old timers - NAUI OW class, early 1970s

8 or 9 OW dives including a night dive? Sounds like the NAUI Advanced Dive to me. Not being able to swim 440 yards in under 10 minutes (usually 10:15 - 10:30 for me) has kept me from being an Instructor but I have had all the other training and skills.

Question for old timers - NAUI OW class, early 1970s

Not quite that old, but yes I got my basic certification in the late 1970's (it was most of 40 years ago). Scuba classes back then were 6 weeks long, and you got really familiar with the equipment. Taking it all off, swimming to the surface (exhaling all the way), going back down and putting it...

    Requirement to do night dives

Night diving (can be fun) requires a good flashlight, compass, and navigation knowledge, all of which is taught in the Advanced Class. Advanced certification, regardless of agency, is generally required for night or ocean diving

Should I work on my swimming before trying snorkeling?

Make sure you can swim several hundred yards ( across an Olympic sized pool and back again several times), That is a Basic Course requirement. You have to be comfortable in the water before attempting Scuba. If you think snorkel, boots (not socks), and fins are expensive, check out the BC...

    Equalizing Ears - Beginner Questions

I presume your discover scuba class is in a pool? Same experience as swimming to the bottom of the pool. You just get to stay there longer. Clearing your ears means equalizing the pressure on both sides of your tympanic membrane (i.e., ear drum). The pool is at 1 ATM. So is your home, so there...
