You’re about an hour and half closer to Wilmington, NC than you are to the Morehead area. There is good diving out of Wilmington/Wrightsville Beach. Aquatic Safaris is a dependable operation. They go to a variety of wrecks and ledges. I dive with them frequently.
Morehead has several good...
The sand tigers are out right now. They’re seen in larger numbers in the Morehead/Atlantic Beach area. The wrecks where sand tigers are most commonly seen are the Aeolus, Spar, Papoose, and I did see 3-4 on the Schurz on Saturday. All of these wrecks are 100’-120’.
Sand tigers can also be seen...
When I did a little diving in Europe a few years this was very popular. Even individual divers had custom stamps made for stamping other log books. After the dive people would stamp each other’s log, date it and have a beer.
Definitely extra work but kind of fun. No real point to it though...
I’m not familiar with the WD-4.
The John D Gill is called the WR4 sometimes if that’s what you mean. It’s a good dive. I’ve seen octopus and sand tigers there.
Aquatic Safaris goes to the Hyde a lot. It’s a good dive and usually has a few sand tigers on it. It’s 18 miles offshore. The farther you get offshore the better the vis gets.
Some of my favorite wrecks out of Wrightsville Beach are the Normannia, Cassimir, and the City of Houston.
If you get...

“While making up only a small fraction of our total body mass, the brain represents the largest source of energy...
In post #8 of this thread you can see a couple of sand tigers resting on the bottom in the first minute of the video exactly as @RyanT described. This was in NC this past December.
I haven't had Jon as an instructor but I have been out on charters in NC when he was teaching and I have spent some time talking to him between dives and I have been very impressed with him. He's just as you describe.
I do have a few tips/advantages:
1. I sign up a lot. Almost every weekend for both Saturday and Sunday hoping that one charter will make it out. I live in Cary and it's 2.5 hour drive for me to get to Wilmington. I can leave that morning and catch a boat that leaves at 8:30am without a problem...
This was one of my best years diving NC. I made 47 ocean dives off the NC coast this year. I had the highest percentage of dives make it out this year than in the past three years. There are a couple of operators still currently running charters. I had three charters make it out this December.
