I was just looking at one of these at a LDS tonight. Is there a way to tell by serial number, etc... Whether it's a "new & improved" edition vs. one with potential issues?

It sounds like you already have place in mind to do the dives, just to make yourself feel better and not stressed out over it, call them and make sure they are fine with the NAUI referral.
