Yep it does happen - my tank o-ring broke (or whatever o-rings do) during a night dive. Practice the OOA scenario at nite too with your torch swinging off your wrist!

Just to update, I tried the torch with brand new alkalines and it still faded - so it's definitely not the fault of the rechargeable batteries. I've emailed the dive shop in Perth where I bought it.

Yup that's true, here in Australia the golden rule is back on the boat with 50 bar, start up at 70 bar (most dives round here are 15m or so).

I usually do all boat diving. In the last 6 months I've done a few pier/jetty dives too (giant stride entry) which I think has the best of both worlds - you get to just jump in but without having to get on a boat. The only beach dives I've ever done was 2.5 years ago while getting certified...
