    This morning in Egypt ...

There have been a lot of suggestions but wouldn't one approach be to target 'reforms' on the boat owners (as opposed to the countries)? It can be difficult to know what safety standards some boats have but if there were standards, or a way that companies can market safety then divers may be...

People embarrassed to do pre dive buddy check?

At the very least (especially with instabuddies) I want to know where their safe second/octopus is, where their weight drop system is, how much air is in both of our tanks, how they were trained in out of air situations. I'm an old geezer, trained with buddy breathing and a great instructor who...

    This morning in Egypt ...

Looks like the website of Tornado Marine Fleet has been hacked? Every time I try to go to it some scam appears.

According to other press reports, the three who died had chosen not to dive that morning.

    "old school" training?

I think that approach is fine until something goes wrong, or seriously wrong. Yes, it covers conditions, generally, although I have been in heavy currents on the Great Barrier Reef that a diver trained in typical tropical locations would be caught out by. One can argue that whether some of the...

    "old school" training?

The recent thread about the conditions in Monterey where a fatality occurred has made me really think hard about the way I learned, versus how diving seems to be taught now. I did my basic, AOW and Dive Coordinator back in the 70s with NASDS (now SSI). We had substantial amounts of theory, pool...

    Reports of Monterey fatality

Yep, when I was certified in the 70s it was a one day boat dives (usually Coronados) one day beach dives (La Jolla). Seems like most of what was taught back then would require your basic, probably much of AOW and several 'specialty' courses to achieve the same level of training now. And what...

Has your dive boat been exempted from the rules?

As part of the LA Times follow-up on the Conception accident, they have a database showing the boats that have received exemptions to safety rules, a few of these are liveaboards in S. Cal. More than 100 boats in California exempted from Coast Guard fire safety rules, Times data shows

    Streamlined OW Regulator Setup

I always ask anyone I am diving with who they were trained with? Are they used to primary donate or secondary donate? This differs between agencies. A panicked diver is likely to grab your primary anyway, regardless fo how they were trained.

Fire on safari boat Suzana in Egypt (Red Sea Aggressor)

The owner would have to know by now unless everyone is keeping it swept under the rug. The eyewitness statements have certainly been out there so it is hard to believe that key people (i.e., in the Aggressor office and the boat owner) do not know.

Fire on safari boat Suzana in Egypt (Red Sea Aggressor)

Note that the RSA 2 staff were continuing to give mis-leading information (according to the survivors and roommate of the victim), even now. This is really inexcusable, and a black mark on Aggressor Fleet that they still seem to have poor control over their franchises. The information they...

    Are you calling me?

Clearly you have some axe to grind. If you think that you can help restore a reef by tossing bread out then there are probably groups out there that will fund you and let you try it. The ecology of reefs is well-studied, as is what happens when different groups are removed from the ecosystem...

    Are you calling me?

If you are talking about in Great Barrier Reef National Park - very illegal. Also, starts at the wrong place in the food chain (medium to large fish). Many of the sounds in the recording are shrimp, other invertebrates.

    Are you calling me?

The fish stayed around for the length of the experiment (I believe it was 40 days). When coral is bleached it often grows algae and one of the recovery issues is lack of fish to keep the algae in check (in areas where they are heavily fished/dynamite fished). So, there is food there, and the...

    What gives??? SeaLife DC2000

I have one and it's been great, and the video is good as well. It even survived a week submerged at 100' with no problems (long story). I would look hard at the new 4k version though, but I mostly shoot video when I can.

    Sharkproof wet suit

While they casually mentioned bite force they emphasized the protection against 'slashing'. Bite force of Great White >15,000 newtons. Pressure to break femur, 4,000 newtons. Not to say it might not have some benefit but....

Russian drifted for two days in 8°C/46°F degree waters - Sea of Japan

After being involved in a rescue where the lifeguards on the beach didn't see the stricken diver or the rescue group for a long period of time I started carrying a waterproof pencil rocket flare. I tried diving with it first in a goody bag (just in case it decided to fire) then in my wetsuit...
