As far as why dive agencies don't encourage emergency breathing out of a BCD and techniques to sanitize the BCD, as well as an account of a diver fatality from breathing from a BCD, this is a good read:
Emergency Breathing from Your BCD: Undercurrent 06/2011
You live anywhere near Squires? My brother lives there, he's the same age as you and an occasional diver. I'm always suggesting he do some local dives to stay current with his skills, I bet if he had someone to dive with he'd do it more often. He says there are some lakes in the area that make...
Yes any diver that runs out of gas probably has an issue with proper dive planning although that is not the only reason a diver can be in this predicament. But you know what? It happens, and the results are often fatal. Of the limited options available to an OOA diver at depth, breathing the...
Fresh water does NOT adequately sanitize a BCD. It might make it clean enough for it's intended use but it does not kill the micro organisms that live in the anaerobic environment within the confines of a BCD bladder.
Not getting how the survival estimates would be greater if some of the crew was killed in the explosion. If there was an explosion that killed some crew, that area of the ship and any oxygen in that area would be history.
Typically the Nitrox analyzing on a dive charter is done at the dock, in the rather short period of time between boarding and leaving the dock. During that time I am busy checking and assembling my own kit, so as to be sure everything is there and working properly before we no longer have the...
When I'm not diving with a charter, or with a charter that does not provide the service, I put my own rig together and disassemble it. When I'm in a tropical location with a full service dive op that provides the service, I'm more than happy to let them do it for me but of course I'll check it...
I'm still using the first generation of this line, which was the VT Pro. Between me and my GF we have 6 of them, primary and not one, but two backups since they're no longer supported.
It's a full featured computer that does pretty much everything it's predecessors do, for a fraction of the...
I'm a cold water diver and just recently got my own boat because dive charters in my area have been dropping like flies and the only way to get out there is with a private boat, but I've given the whole thing a lot of thought and I can offer the following as a guess.
Local dive ops give...
I can think of one reason to sanitize a BCD bladder. If you find yourself in an out of gas situation, and the only thing between you and certain death is the gas remaining in your BCD. I've read where divers have breathed that gas and gotten sick and even died because of the bacteria that...
I'm not a new diver and I get that the MOF concept is outdated and some instructors go overboard trying to enforce it. My post was all about diver panic which has nothing to do with a mask on forehead. Placing a mask on forehead is not something a panicked diver would do if anything they'd...
Every time I see this thread title go by I think it says something else. Then I blink my eyes, read it again and it's all good. Is anyone else having that issue?
Bad idea: Ask random strangers on an internet message board if it's ok to bring marijuana on an aircraft to a foreign country.
Worse idea: Accept the advice as being valid
Worst idea: Actually be stupid enough to do it
This thread should have been posted in the humor section for better clarification and less ambiguity.
Not that there's anything funny about a panicking diver.
