What’s the most random or awesome thing you’ve found on a dive?

Half a strimmer/weed whacker (the rotating end, no motor) out at sea.

    BP/W pockets, again!

I sometimes use a thigh pocket, which is not buoyant. Here's just one example. Loop goes on your waistbelt. Pocket clips into that and around your thigh.

DIVE DRY WITH DR. BILL #899: KEEPING THE KIDS CLOSE BY

Vegan here. We feed our dog the right dry food for her constitution, which contains some percentage of animal. We can thrive on a vegan diet. She would not.

How old to become a viable scuba instructor?

(And if you want an awesome course director I can let you know who they are!)

How old to become a viable scuba instructor?

I can't properly answer your question but I'm 48, live in the UK (also on the south coast) and am close to qualifying as a DM having got into diving in the last couple of years. Many of the other DMs at our dive centre are around this age (we have a couple of DMTs in their 20s). Instructor ages...

Neoprene wrist seals - how do these work?

I dive year round with neoprene wrist seals. You need to get them tailored to fit your wrist (for example o'three will adjust them for free when you buy an off the peg suit from them). When that is done they form an excellent seal. (Unless you've got monster wrist tendons, in which case any seal...

    Snorkeling & Dry Suit

I agree that a surface drysuit would almost certainly suffice for snorkeling, I've done this in cold water before. I have a GUL code zero model but that's just one example. Make sure the neck and wrist seals are a good fit.

What does Padi Deep water certification teach that AOW does not?

Here's my recent experience of completing my deep certification in the UK and why I found it useful. My diving doesn't take me to more than 30m but I wanted experience of diving at 40m. I'm well known to my dive school. I've trained with them and dive with them regularly, so they know my diving...

    Apeks ATX vs XL4

I have XTX50s and my teenage son has XL4s. Both are excellent regs and breathe really well. Basically, the XL4's have all the travel-friendly lightness of the Flight regs but with full cold water performance. To be honest for a centre I think you'd be fine with ATXs, which is what my local...

    Apeks BP/W Setup Question

I use the WTX harness and D30 wing, as do several other divers I know. None of us use an STA with a single tank, including 15l. Our cam straps are threaded through the holes in the wing, through the corresponding vertical 2" straps that run up the back of the harness, and then back out of the...

    What price a torch?

Orca torches are great. We have a couple of these. 630 lumens is great for most non-murky diving. You'll also need a 1 or 2 (if you want a spare) 14500 lithium batteries suitable for torches + a charger, but they'll also take AA (but give out 180 lumens).

How unsafe was this intro dive?

Nope, it sounds terrifying. An open water discover scuba dive should be limited to 12m as I remember and should take place in a location the instructor is fully familiar with. Out of air on a course is astonishing and ending up 80m from the shore is, too. I'd expect that dive to be shallow and...

Where to buy Line for Tying off Equipment

Braided cord on ebay. I buy 1.5 or 2mm white nylon.

    Apeks XTX-100 Dust Cap

I have XTX 50s. Mine's onto one of the hoses with 2mm accessory cord.

    Current PADI Rescue requirements

Yes, that got discussed a lot. The best night in the pool was where we assisted panicking divers while the course leaders added extra victims into the mix (including our buddies at one point), who were always silent, either on the surface or already at the bottom - just to prove this very point.

    Aqua Lung Rogue modularity

As I understand, there's only one air cell option - 35lb.

    Current PADI Rescue requirements

100% about the 'hairy ape' stress mentioned above! When you're in the pool and about to assist a 'panicking' DM who's flailing his arms like an angry orang utan, just dont! Give them a minute or two to get tired and then get in there. (It helped that all the DMs assisting with my course turned...

    Current PADI Rescue requirements

I've recently completed mine (in the UK). We did nothing like that. Full 'carries' were optional though most of us tried a few steps using whatever technique was best suited to us. We were a mixed group, from petite young ladies to burly ex-forces. Anything to do with carrying or lifts was...
