2 DCS hits and a PFO closure

Great post, and important. If anyone is interested in knowing more about PFOs, here is a piece I wrote about them a couple of years ago for the Wilderness Medicine Newsletter. Jeff Toorish Photography

    Another Eagles Nest fatality

Yes, any unattended death or death in unusual circumstances is initially considered a crime scene until PD has a chance to gather evidence.

Which cave has killed the most divers?

Agreed, caves don't kill cave divers, cave divers kill cave divers. But assuming the genesis of the question is which caves pose the greatest danger to divers, the question would have to be parsed based on deaths per thousand dive-hours dived, for example.

I'm in shock. Keeping a good thought.

    Why Aren't There Scuba Celebrities?

I suspect another reason we don't have top of the mind scuba celebrities, with the possible exception of Cousteau, is because diving is not a spectator sport or activity. People become celebrities because other people watch them either on TV or in person. That's tough with scuba. Jeff

diver from Orlando missing while diving the Eagle

First off, my best thoughts to the family and friends of this young man. Diving from an unmanned boat in the Gulf Stream on a windy day when the weather is deteriorating is, clearly, not advised. But a basic tenant of any situation where you are essentially lost is to stay put. From reading...

burning the film on your mask

I burn off the film on new masks. A dive instructor in Dominican Republic showed me the trick --Just take a bic lighter and move the flame around inside mask. Don't hover over the silicone areas of course, just hover over the glass. You will see a sort of black soot begin to develop where the...

    Interfering Diver

That is exactly what I was thinking. Many diver masters and instructors, when diving for pleasure of on vacation, will not mention their professional status because of concerns about liability. More importantly, a DM who is not actually working as a DM and has only 120 dives but asserts...

    B & H Photo

They are probably the most legit site on the 'net. I have spent probably close to six figures with them over the years and I would give them a 100% rating. Usually the best prices and you get what you order --no hassles. If you have questions, they actually know what they are talking...

    help canon lens

It really depends on what you are planning to shoot and the conditions you will be shooting in. For macro, or in poor visibility I use the Canon 100mm Macro with a flat port. In normal conditions, and as my default lens, I use the canon 10-22mm S series lens with an eight inch dome port...

    TSA got you down?

For me it is simple, if the TSA can't do it's job without irradiating Americans or molesting them, then TSA can't do its job, period. I am probably one of the most liberal people on this board --but when it comes to civil liberties, there is no compromise for me. Make no mistake, these...

    AquaLung Slingshot Fins

I have a pair and I like them --they are find fins. I stopped using them when I got a pair of APS Mantaray fins. The Mantarays are as comfortable as the Slingshots but they seem to have more power. Jeff

    dive buddy got bent

I have to say, I'm a little stunned by this thread. Personally, I'm not sure DAN (or any other insurance company) can help you navigate the system. DAN has an excellent product that does exactly what it is advertised to do; it is a secondary insurer, meaning it picks up what your primary...

    Devil's Tattoo (Dive Video)

A short video. Trying to remove a porthole from the wreck of the fishing boat Jessica Ann: it should have been simple but it was not. It seemed as if the devil himself had tattooed that porthole onto the boat. Here is the link to the video: Devil's Tattoo The song is Beat the Devil's...

Truly a tragedy. Wes holds a unique place in diving, exploration and underwater photography and videography. He will truly be missed. Good Bye, Wes. Jeff

    Nitrox to an OOA Diver?

You beat me to it. Pressurize the tank then turn it off. There should be plenty of gas for a couple of breaths, giving you time to turn on the tank. If there is no air, then it leaked, and it might have all leaked if the tank was on. Jeff

Old Diver needs new fin reccomendations

APS Mantaray Fins --you will never want to dive with anything else. I've lent mine to several friends and most of them purchased a pair soon afterward. When I let a local dive shop owner try them, he became a distributor. Their website is APS Mantaray Dive Fins Here's a review I wrote...
