I had the same question when I started diving without a professional. They took the dives with and without a dive professional. When they made my advanced open water card they looked online and when we met up they signed and stamped the appropriate levels in my logbook. It was pretty easy for us.

What determines whether your certification level is your exam score. I believe the standard is 70% = 32% and 80% = 40%, but those numbers may be off a little bit.
