Looking for active dive clubs/divers - Charleston

Hey, I'm a diver in South Carolina. I just found this thread via search. You'll want to check out The Amazing Divers of Lake Jocassee, Lake Murray Divers, and Divers of Augusta, all Facebook groups, for lake diving. There's also Charleston Scuba Group for divers in the Charleston area, but I...

    My AN/DP/Helitrox course

The problem with color codes that actually makes them dangerous in practice is that a number of people who practice them do not do so because they have carefully designed a system for safe gas switches using them, but instead because they happened to have a green stage regulator for their oxygen...

    My AN/DP/Helitrox course

Regarding the ppO₂ limit, if you're looking for an authoritative source, the US Navy Dive Manual is published freely on the internet by NAVSEA. I don't think I've ever heard someone refer to the limits of the Navy manual as particularly conservative, but in revision 7, §3‑9.2.2 it prescribes a...

    Freediving after scuba diving

The freediving itself is more or less irrelevant. It's just another rapid ascent without a safety stop, which is advised against for the usual reasons. I suspect, though I do not have data to make a recommendation, that there would not be any additional risk associated with a freedive on which...

    Going to twins, best way?

I can't comment on tank choices as I am from the US and my options are very different to yours. I don't consider the transition to backmount doubles to be a huge deal if you're starting on single tank, at least if you're going from a GUE singles configuration to a GUE doubles configuration...

How many dives did you manage in 2019 - Recap

This year I was limited by a few things, including lots of visiting family, moving twice, lacking a proper drysuit, and being a student so I didn't have much in the way of funds. I've got an order in for a drysuit now, though, and I'm looking forward to being able to dive multiple times per...

    DIR- Generic Bottom timer recommendations

I'm using a Mares Puck Pro in gauge mode. It has backlight and resettable minutes/seconds timer and a non-resettable minutes timer., as well as resettable average depth. That's everything I've ever wanted, but on the cons side I'm not the hugest fan of the one-button operation. To reset the...

    Moving to Charleston area

I live in the area, but I'll only be diving pools and occasionally Lake Keowee until probably March or April. After that, I plan on doing lake dives just about every weekend. Feel free to DM me if you want to go on a dive.

Happy to always dive advanced within recreational limits, forever ? [Poll]

If you define tech diving by "can you make a direct ascent at any time?" then it's definitely worth it to me, and like others I've answered "as soon as possible" because I am absolutely going to become a tech diver but I don't necessarily agree with the schedule that implies. If you define tech...

    Deco planner software recommendation

MultiDeco has a "- or +" where you can say, calculate derivative profiles for base profile plus or minus some amount of depth or bottom time, or plus or minus some fraction helium or O₂ in bottom mix. The formatting in the program can be a bit wonky if you do a bunch of them, but copypasting it...

    Oversized boots

I recently got my first drysuit, at a price that I don't think anyone could say no to considering everything is in good working order and it has no leaks. The only problem was the boots were too big. Enough so that if they have air in them, I cannot fin effectively. My feet have too much room...

    Path to tech diving

I didn't mean to imply you were as bad as the diver I referenced; I was only trying to say that it is certainly possible to be an AN/DP diver and still have something to gain from working on fundamental skills—something I thought we were in agreement on as you seemed to express interest in doing...

    Path to tech diving

I've witnessed at least one AN/DP diver who literally reels themselves up and dangles from their lift bag in near-vertical trim to maintain stops. That diver certainly doesn't represent the norm for that class, but they go to show it's certainly possible to get the card without diving at a GUE...

    Am I progressing too fast?

Right now I'm just in the process of talking to the instructor, as we're both busy for the immediate future (they're involved in a project and I'm in college). It's sometime in May, but that's as specific as we're able to get at the moment.

    Am I progressing too fast?

I'm specifically not aiming for a tech pass, as I won't be taking the class in doubles. I'd like to earn a rec pass, but I won't feel the class was a waste if I don't.

    Am I progressing too fast?

Not yet; that's in the plan for after I can dive at a fundies level in a drysuit.

    Am I progressing too fast?

I'd rather not say exactly where I am in SC publicly for the sake of not doxxing myself, but I'm reasonably certain I already know who you would recommend. I took OW through that shop and they introduced me to the instructor I plan on using for fundies.

    Am I progressing too fast?

The original thing that drew me to scuba diving was caves, which are definitely not OW, but my local diving has introduced me to a lot of interesting history in the tech1 range, and I'll admit that the fact fewer living people have seen some of it than have seen the surface of the moon is really...

    Am I progressing too fast?

That's just the thing, though. Seldom will a diver be upfront with anyone (least of all themselves) that they're an extreme pedal-to-the-metal diver. I consider myself highly risk averse; you can judge a lot about me from the fact that my pencil sketches are almost always lighter than I'd like...

    Am I progressing too fast?

In fairness, they are an instructor and are fully qualified to lead OW divers to that depth in the process of making them AOW divers. Frankly, though, I really shouldn't have mentioned that because even if it arguably makes them less of an authority, it doesn't make them any more or less correct.
