Do you carry a tourniquet when diving?

Not to put a dampener on this, but if you're asking this kind of question I'd recommend saving your money on whatever medical stuff you think you should bring and spend it on quality training in how to actually use it first. You can certainly be the next person with the great idea to drop cash...

When, if ever is it safe for a diver to make multiple trips from the bottom to surface in one dive?

Sure, I've had to do some bounce diving on my dive job. In particular, it involved me cleaning a 30-40ft pool over two or so tanks (about 2 hours) while other people did construction work on a structure overhanging the pool (without going into detail, it was safer than it sounds). In the event...

Descent Mk2 owners - How dependable is it after daily surface use?

I've had one of the Garmin Tactix watches for a few years now. I really like it. It does all the fancy stuff it's advertised to - like telling the time (AND date!). The GPS in particular is very useful for my job around forest fires where pathfinding, navigation, and relaying of coordinates and...

Diving with gradient factors for a new recreational diver

Do you personally feel like the typical 3min @ 5m is insufficient for you? Are you feeling ill at the surface or later in the day? Some red flag like that? If not, I'd say no - all this isn't practical. I don't think anyone will fault you for having concerns for your own safety, but before...

Pony bottle sling - position question

When I used a back-mounted pony for diving at work, it was mounted upside down. This kept it away from our front where we had other hoses/equipment to worry about, as well as dragging it along pool bottoms or fixtures. But on my own in open water I'd rather have it right-side up in front of me...

Urchin cull approved for Monterey reef

Reef Check is doing surveys intended to gauge the effectiveness of kelp forest restoration actions this weekend and next weekend. It'll involve CA dept of fish n' feathers and the marine sanctuary, so if you're going to test anyone's authority please wait until after the 19th.

Hungry tropical fish, sea urchins marching south as kelp forests disappear

Did an AAUS course about a week ago and found a barren developing at one of the survey locations in Big Sur. On some of the transects, you had to count over 200 purps before reaching 5m along the tape.

    Lock's that work underwater?

When we had to use locks for diving at work, the only true lock with key we used were for lockout/tagout areas. The keys stayed with the diver. The locks never entered the pool, but did get wet with salt water and had to get sprayed with WD40 now and again. For the stuff underwater we used...

Urchin cull approved for Monterey reef

Hmm. I thought this would be a pretty cool and interesting thing to get onboard with, but this is where I have to reconsider. I'm kind of worn out on the mentality of paying a few hundred dollars to voluntarily do someone else's work.

    CESA Training

The necessary training for this was all covered in OW. For anyone that actually has had to do a CESA and believes that repeated prac-app training of it is important, I would question that conclusion over a reassessment of their pre-dive checks or diving habits. Cover your bases to prevent being...

    Rescue Diver review poll

For those of you comfortable with basic first aid, CPR/AED use, let's take it a step further: can you explain the pathophysiology behind a DCI or similar event you'd have to deal with? When I first was learning nitrox, I had a medical question I'm not sure I ever found a direct answer for: Say...

[PADI] how to look up a certificate without logging to Pro zone and "losing a card"?

Google gave me a cached link similar to the one you're looking for: Student Lookup I'm guessing it's something a registered shop could use to lookup students and your average Joe shouldn't be able to see this?

SoCal Dive Reports - Let us know about your dive!

Coming off a nice case of sinus barotrauma followed by 6 weeks of one illness after another, I finally got back in the water. Even so, it was a comedy of errors leading up to it - waking up with a stuffy nose, an SPG spool giving out as I'm setting up gear, a (freshly serviced) regulator wanting...

PADI and technology (what’s the deal with e-cards?)

If you're gonna talk about PADI cash-grabs and c-cards, I'd just point to the PIC. You can be best friends with an instructor and convince them to give you a $400 course for free, someone still has to cough up for the PIC. I remember seeing an option to pay for my OW e-card. It didn't make...

Added tourniquet to my thigh pocket

HB, you are - of course - offering training that follows appropriate guidelines, and not what you've learned in the military? Your students probably can't talk their way out of litigation like you'd be able to, especially if no certifications are involved. There are plenty of tricks I got in CLS...

Added tourniquet to my thigh pocket

I used bring a tourniquet with me while diving for when I get arterial blood loss 40ft underwater from a shark attack, but I recently switched to finding the CG rescue swimmer or PJ with a stocked trauma kit and buddying up with them so they can deal with it.

Cuba Travel cancelled by US government

Is this as impassable as some people are making it seem? It's one of twelve. Sure, it's the most annoying, but it doesn't seem like it'd be too difficult to phrase your reason to visit to fit one of the other authorized categories - even if they did ask for proof.

    Pony Bottle

I use an AL30 slung on the left with I think a 26" octo hose and naked spg on 6" hose, as others have suggested. More than enough to safely terminate any dive with a safety stop in rec limits, which is where it's used. Hardly notice it in the water. I don't use it when I have a buddy. But after...

Tuna Crabs Invade Redondo Beach, CA

We got them in San Diego just before April this year. Not invasive, just appear out of nowhere for a while. It's probably not a good idea to eat them.
