    DM Expectations...

Free air, slight food discounts, occasional cheesecake, and someone's couch to sleep on if necessary. Beats sandwiches.

    Al 63s or 80s?

Glad to know that I'm not such a horrible inconsiderate buddy-killing person as the shop guy seemed to be implying, and that "Thou shalt always dive Al 80s" has not joined the list of commandments with "Thou shalt always wear a snorkel" in this country! Thank you for that, now I can sleep at...

    Al 63s or 80s?

Most instructors and DMs I see don't dive with the standard Al 80s, usually going with the Al 63s or some variant of steel tanks, and often smaller people that have chosen to buy their own tanks pick the smaller size as well. So I was a bit surprised when going to buy new tanks for myself...

When does the world go metric...

Learning to dive in a completely metric country makes life easier...then when you take your metric brain and metric gear back and make fun of how backwards everyone is... Went on a road trip in Canada in an American-made car where the Km markings existed, but were very hard to see, but it...

Another Newbie Q - wrist or console?

Wrist computer's easier to get near your face so you can see it, and if someone steals it, you can still dive without it because you've got a fully functioning console. My compass is on my console and I find it inconvenient compared to on my wrist, but for how often I use it it's ok to stay there.

    New Reg Question

I notice bubble interference with my Proton Ice only if I'm getting lazy and swimming with my mouthpiece (SeaCure) dangling too far out of my mouth that I'm blowing bubbles from under my top lip...strangely, don't seem to suck any water in while doing that. Otherwise, I haven't noticed any...

    aeris xr 2 good choice?

Atmos 2's bigger and easier to read, but same guts. Good computer. I had one, it got stolen, and I replaced it with the same model, because I didn't like the screen on the XR2.

    The "Smoking" Diver

I've seen chain smoking male divers cough up the nastiest wads of phlegm, and then to proceed to breathe through their gills during the dive, using less air than nonsmoking females. Wasn't good evidence to try and convince one of my friends to quit smoking.

    Octo or inline inflator reg?

You still have to worry about them ripping the reg out of your mouth if they decide it's closer than your octo, but at least you get a *real* second stage to breathe off if they do. I have no desire for an octo inflator, thank you very much...

    Mares proton

Dove with a guy that had one of these (I've got the V32 Proton Ice), the only time he had much trouble breathing out of it was when someone'd yank it out of his mouth, but that was found to be a problem for people with Sherwood and Scubapro regs, too. Both it and mine happily delivered air as...

When does the world go metric...

My brain works like that as well, but I'm Canadian, so that accounts for most of it. Long distances in metric, short distances in feet, hot temperatures in F, cold in C - the latter probably because it sounds better when you exaggerate. Distances I'd measure in feet on land I measure in metric...

    PADI? A necessity?

I have my DM cert on a file on my computer, I suppose to save them the trouble of reprinting one should I lose mine, with access to a badge printer, I could reprint mine at will...

How long before taking advanced class?

Where I've dived, you don't go past 20m if you don't have an AOW card if you're going on a guided dive, but AOW is usually taken immediately after OW, it's run basically as one course, though you can only take OW if you want. The exception to that is, of course, if you've got so many dives...

    jacket style vs. back inflation

Some of us *like* the squeeze you get from a jacket BCD, and the pockets are a nice touch. Having never tried it, but know other people must do it, I'm assuming a nice relaxing surface swim on your back is not *too* much harder in a back-inflate or BP/W? I don't usually dive with people...

Was my expierience unique, or the norm?

The only part of the gear discussion that involved acquiring/using your own in my OW class was "If you already have a mask, as long as it says T or tempered on it, it's fine to use it for diving", and "You can rent the booties, but we also have them for sale if you don't want to put your feet in...

    Weight-integrated BCD or belt?

I usually put the majority of my weights on the belt (when diving in cold water) and the smaller weights in the pockets, saves me from having to wear really huge bricks on my hips and across my back under the tank (not such an issue on boat dives, but quite unpleasant on shore dives). When I...

Atmos 2 vs the Aladin tec

Yes, that was what he was doing, and he also used the computer to change it to metric, maybe because he didn't know how to do it without, or because he was already there. The alarms were going off for everything before he changed it, those of us diving with him swore the thing beeped when there...

Atmos 2 vs the Aladin tec

I've used both the Atmos 2 and the Uwatec (borrowed, after my Atmos 2 was stolen), and I far prefer the Atmos 2, though the Uwatec didn't kill me taking it on a couple rather deep dives. You can't change settings on the Uwatecs without the computer interface (it seems, from a friend who had one...

    Something odd with PADI

When I got my nitrox card, the first cert I got through PADI, the address they had on file for me was somewhere I hadn't lived in roughly 8 years, I'd moved twice since then. I had absolutely no clue how they ever got that address, as I wasn't a diver when I lived there, until I logged on to...
