I don't know if you fixed the problem, but it seems to my eye more related with the flash charging circuit: the camera will block the shutter till the flash capacitor has a sufficient voltage. If either the capacitor or the charging circuit is dead, i asume the 'ready' flag will be always down.

This is very interesting for me. I am doing extreme macro with the TG4 without problems. Why couldn't you approach more to the nudi? I have complaints about the noise of the sensor in the TG4 -but probably TG6 will still be noisy-, but not about the possibility of focusing near the object.

For nudibranchs and small macro, i don't really see the need of additional lights. At least with TG4 the built in flash allows for some crazy shots once you understand its limitations (minimum distance for avoiding shades). This and a hand held torch for night dives is a good compact setup...

I had no problem using cheap 1 mm audio cable (about 1 EUR). Just cut the adaptors and build your own with plastic or rubber. Honestly, audio cable specifications seem more challenging than a flash trigger.
