    PFO and Helium

Thank you very much Dr. Mitchell!

    PFO and Helium

I remember hearing or reading somewhere that diving with Helium can be more dangerous to people with PFOs since it's a lighter and faster gas, so the bubbles can more easily pass to the left atrium. Has this been proven or is it just speculation? Any research about this? Thanks

Wanted Shearwater Perdix (AI or not)

Hello, Currently looking for a Shearwater Perdix, whether AI or not it doesn't really matter. PM me or reply. Thank you!

    Teaching quality AND quantity

I don't personally think PADI is to blame for everything, but of course it doesn't help if their standards are set at the lowest common denominator. DCs will exploit that (and have for decades, that's the point) to maximize profit, just like @Lanny said. If their standards were even a little...

    Teaching quality AND quantity

This is what I was looking for... mind blown. So simple yet so effective and I can see it saving LOADS of time.

    Teaching quality AND quantity

Sorry I thought you meant the DM skills. OW skills are taught in "confined" open water, which often means poor visibility, current and wave. Of course not to the point of danger but enough to run through them sloppily just to meet the standards and move on. The shops here are not part of resorts...

That's great resources, thank you! Nope, I'm not even DM yet so I still retain freedom of speech :wink:

    Teaching quality AND quantity

That is the point of this thread. Still having some time before becoming instructor I just want to know if it’s possible to find a good balance or if I should just change direction all together. Of course you can be a great PADI Instructor, if you’re ALLOWED to and given the resources. But what...

    Teaching quality AND quantity

A good instructor can easily become a bad instructor if he’s forced to fight against the clock or face firing. I understand your point but I daily deal with Master Scuba Divers who bolt to the surface, have seahorse trim, swim with their hands, stir up silt and are generally very poor divers...

    Teaching quality AND quantity

With that I meant no pool sessions for DSD and OW students to get accustomed to equipment, weighting, skills etc... DM and IDC skills are done in the pool. I understand and don’t necessarily disagree with the reasons why booking and paying for external pool sessions can be avoided, but of course...

    Teaching quality AND quantity

I'm a soon-to-be PADI instructor and I totally disagree with the low standards and procedures (students on the knees etc...). Here, as probably anywhere else in the world, the instructors who are most praised by the dive shop owners are of course those who can squeeze as many courses/dives a day...

    P-valve not connected

Ok just a follow-up: the manufacturer recommends I leave the valve open all the time, wether connected or not. Reason is that the air you put in the suit at depth will go into the balance chamber and is trapped by a one-way valve. To release that pressure when ascending the valve needs to be...

    P-valve not connected

That's what I thought, but nobody I know does that, plus I received an email from the drysuit manufacturer (not the p-valve manufacturer) who said to always keep it closed when not in use. If by a "stop valve" the T valve that branches off the main hose is meant, then no. The p-valve has an...

    P-valve not connected

No worries. I’ll figure it out one way or another.

    P-valve not connected

The bit I quoted is listed under "When P-valve is NOT connected to diver" When it's connected they just recommend keeping it open as it can hurt the diver's genitals if it stays closed and the diver didn't urinate. This is so confusing. I don't really mind having to open the valve during ascent...

    P-valve not connected

That's what I thought, so why would they say: "The cap must remain open when it emerges. or every 10m. Otherwise the pressure of the immersion depth remains between the sealing cap and the shield valve in the PeeValve. The shielding valve can be permanently deformed A danger occurs not because...

    P-valve not connected

That's what I thought too, but under 5.0.1.1.2 of the manual (which should be my situation) it says that if the valve stays closed the pressure accumulated during the dive will remain in the balance chamber and damage the valve during ascent (if I'm interpreting that correctly?). But then it...

    P-valve not connected

My new drysuit came with a Heser p-valve. I'm not going to need it until I will start doing longer and deeper dives, but I will use my drysuit tomorrow without connecting the p-valve and I'm not clear on wether it should stay open or closed, or will have to be opened/closed during the dive...

    No knee skills for DM

I'm aware there must be hundreds of threads where this is discussed but just in brief, how does one go about never making students kneel? I had a conversation with my instructor the other day. She's fond of NB and is a tech diver, but maintains it's impossible or even dangerous to skip the...

    Breathing technique

Having tried your suggestions for the last 4/5 dives I have to say I am impressed. I've always felt CO2 management was a bit of a problem for me as I often experienced mild headaches after air dives, but not with Nitrox. Now after trying your techniques I feel like I dive on Nitrox even if I'm...
