Hookah diving in the North West

Been snorkeling the southern end of the Puget Sound for past 6 years and Neah Bay area as well. Have been throwing the idea of hookah diving for past few years. Used to scuba dive years ago in the Gulf off the coast of Panama City. But, now prefer to snorkel or freedive. My question is this...

    Night Time Spearing.

Free diving up in Neah Bay area WA during the 4th of July fire works last year shot my best Ling Cod to date. In about 3 ft of water he was facing the beach and watching the show. 25 inches and stone shot. Oh yea the colors from the show was cool to see in the water.

    Puget sound Spear fishing

If you have never dove up there be careful. Watch the tide exchanges very carefully as currents can drag you out to sea. Also, stay far away from any Makaw fishing nets they have issues about that. Make sure you are west of the Sekiu river when doing any spearfishing. Ling opener is in April I...

    Best Hunting Light Position

wrist mounted - more flexibility as to where I"m pointing the light and where I'm not when I'm shooting. Sometimes I'm dancing the light in front of the fish to distract it while I'm lining up the kill shot.

    Advice needed on technique!

As for weights yes. Yes but not too much and not too little you want to be slightly buoyant at the surface. When floating at the surface some like their mask out of the water some like their whole head out. Depending on how deep you are diving maybe a little less weight. I do a lot of shallow...

What type of boat for diving/spearfishing?

Depends on how many people will be on board. And how much equipment you have to take for the amount of diving you will be doing that day. Sometimes the hatch cover is nice when gearing up or after the dive kind of makes a plat form to work off of. But if you need space you need space which has...

What type of boat for diving/spearfishing?

Anything that floats works in calm water. Something with a v-hall for rougher water. 16ft for starter and up from there works fine. It really depends on how many people are going with you diving to how much room you will want for space on the boat. Lower gun rails are nice for calm water and...

    NW spear fishing

Yes there is but we must be a rather quite bunch. Saw your post a few days ago just haven't had the chance to respond. Most of the Puget Sound is closed to the good fish (Ling Cod) for most of the year except for a very short season. But you can hunt perch and 3 kinds of flounder. Halibut is...

What is a good price for a 7 mm?

Depending on where you dive and how often plays a big part on how much one would spend on a wetsuit. Unless you have the money of course. For myself I shore dive thus requiring a suit that will hold up to that kind of diving. I've always wondered why they don't make a suit with a butt pad...

What is your day of dive diet like?

Speaking from a freediver/snorkeler point of view. I like to drink lots of water before I go dive. Close to a gal or so a day for 2 days. Helps keep the old Charlie horse from sneaking into the picture. This is above my normal gal of water I usually drink. With wetsuit always remember there are...

Do you mind helping a noob select gear for the PNW?

Got into this kind of late. But, contrary to popular belief there are a few of us who do freedive/snorkel the Sound on a regular basis. Check out Bottomsounders dive club. I have only met one of their members and have found him to be very knowledgeable and very safety concerned. I have found...

    Oyster diving in the UK?

You sound like you are heading towards a commercial venture. That opens a whole different set of rules. As opposed to a recreational use license. I'd say contact you fish and wild life government people and see what they say.

    Waving the fish

Hasn't worked for me but tapping on the spear gun is just like ringing the dinner bell.

    Convenient dive spots in Olympia?

Well, sort of, there's Tolmie State park. Long surface swim out to the artificial reef. You can see the marker boys from shore. Not reel bad currents during tide exchanges. The reef is about 40 to 50 ft down. I freedive this one. Next is Stailacoom's pipe line that is used a lot for scuba...

    Clueless

I agree my son and I use there low end guns and have plenty of fish in the freezer. Over the Memorial 3 day weekend saw a guy with a very nice JBL Woody with a spinner tip but was afraid to shoot it. I think he was afraid of damaging the tip. Took me 1/2 hour to sharpen my tip after the weekend...

    Longer Bands?

Less power, I think I'd go with larger diameter band and fewer of them. You just don't want to over power the shaft or it will lose accuracy and will wobble through the water.
