    Welcome home

Sent off for hydro? I have a bunch of tanks that need hydro this year.

    Info on PST Steel Tanks

The tanks are good. There is a special permit that has to be renewed every 5 years, which was last re-approved less than a year ago. PST was bought by another company (forget which), that acted fairly quick to get that permit renewed when they were contacted by SB members.

Question Anyone ever had an incident because they serviced their own gear?

White plastic frequently ages, especailly if left in the sun. I don't know if that's what's happening here or not. You can reverse that type of yellowing using hydrogen-peroxide or something like "40 Volume Cream Peroxide Developer" and a UV light or sunlight. That's assuming you can get the...

    Building a Pony

Adding to this: In theory both your pony and main tank should always have at least enough air for 1-diver to safely surface. However, if you had to, you could still buddy-breathe off your main tank. By the time you might "need" to buddy breathe, the other OOA diver should have had the time to...

    Building a Pony

Make sure you can easily distinguish between the 3 different regulators. Perhaps using a different color of hose or regulator, feel (shape), or location of each regulator. When dealing with 3 (or more) regulators, there's a much grater chance of "regulator confusion", perhaps breathing off an...

    Building a Pony

I'd suggest simply starting with whatever spare regulators you have which would work at 45f. There's no need to go with anything fancy or spend a lot of money. In theory, you only really use those regs in an emergency, so as long as it delivers air when you need it.

    is Sidemount diving more safe?

I've found it's useful to consider both the height of the tank, and the distance you have to lift the tank out of the water. Something else you can do, is use some line and a bolt-snap, which is affixed to the tank-harness. Wrap the cord around the bolt-snap, and then clip the end, so it...

    New diver in Austin, TX

Most people in the Austin area dive Lake Travis. There are two dive-parks, Windy Point and another at the Mansfield Dam. Personally, there aren't many place in Texas that I'm aware of, where the water is warm enough for me to dive in February without a dry-suit. Unless heated swimming pools...

Error What should I have done differently? Diving incident in Cozumel.

How do you know his experience level? Did he tell you? Not seeing someone check their gauge means little. If someone has AI (Air Integration) or is fairly experienced, you may not notice them checking their gauges, because it can be done with a glance. He didn't run OOA, so it's almost a...

Error What should I have done differently? Diving incident in Cozumel.

There's the first obvious mistake. This is a close variation of "don't endanger yourself to rescue another diver." Next, as someone who normally dives solo, I'm inclined to say if a (intentional) solo-diver decides to behave "like a solo diver" then you should let them do their thing. They're...

Question How Do They Choose and Prepare Ships for Wreck Dive Sites?

It's something I'm a little curious about, although I suspect it's often not as complex or interesting as it might first appear. Is the ship actually being sunk, because it's motivated by creating a reef and a dive site for scuba-divers? Or is it being sunk, because disposal would be expensive...

    Lending Gear yay or nay

My "save a dive kit" has primarily been used to rescue dives for other divers. There is some gear in there intended as either loaners or backups. For about 1-year I carried every component of a regulator in there (1st,2nd,spg,hoses), and only removed it in the process of streamlining the kit.

    Breaking down wrecked regs

There are videos on YouTube for some regulators for how to break them down, service them, and put them back together. edit: First stage regulators are a little more difficult, due to more often requiring specialized tools than 2nd stages. Potentially a spanner wrench or two, and then a tool...

    Failed Hydro AND failed Viz?

What was the reason it failed the second visual? To fail a tank, you need a reason. The whole failing both hydro and visual makes zero sense to me. It either fails visual, and doesn't go to hydro, or it fails hydro, and therefore you don't need to vis it.
