Redundant Octos & 2nd Stages Unable to Deliver Air?

Disclaimer: This is an advanced thread, I do not advocate beginner-to-intermediate divers ditching their octo. In a thread about pony-bottles, the topic of whether or not to ditch your octo came up. Specifically, someone mentioned being unable to access your larger air supply, if you use a...

    Info Are Pony Bottles Dangerous?

Branching off another thread, which went mildly off-topic: Are pony bottles dangerous? What are the hazards of pony bottles? What safety advice would you give to someone using a pony bottle? What other advice (sizing, selection, configuration, etc) would you give for pony bottle use? This is...

Marina Drama, Buddy's Boat Stuck in Drydock, and Marina Doing Nothing. /rant

(This is mostly just a rant thread) One of my dive-buddies owns 26ft boat, which is stored in a dry-stack (covered warehouse), where he can call to have his boat put in or taken out of the water. Recently, that marina has gotten in a legal dispute with a nearby property owner, and apparently...

    Approximate cost of Tank Tumbling?

I just took 2 steel tanks in to the shop for VIP (which is now $30 .... ripoff) and the shop says both tanks will need to be tumbled as well, which apparently costs $55/each. That price sounds high, but I've never needed tanks tumbled before. I may do some calling around tomorrow to see prices...

Texas Treasure Divers on YouTube - Sunglasses, iWatches, Phones, and other interesting items.

If you're into underwater treasures, you might enjoy this small youtube channel. Most of their finds are sunglasses, iPhones, iWatches, and similar items. It's not too flashy or clickbaity like some of the other channels I've seen. Their editing also seems to be consistently improving over time.

Hydro in Austin, Roundrock, or Temple area?

About 2.5 years ago, I was able to get Hydro (only) from 1st Fire Safety for $20/tank if I'm remembering correctly. When I contacted them more recently, they quoted $30/tank. I've send out a number of email to various places that might to hydro, but haven't found anything else yet...

    Stretching Neoprene?

I have some wetsuits that do fit and are perfectly usable, but are perhaps just slightly barely smaller than I'd like. Does anyone have advice or techniques for stretching neoprene (other than buy another)?

What Are Your "Pro-Tips" for Safety, Redundancy, and Accident Handling

What are your "pro tips" (or amateur tips) for improving one's safety when diving? This can be equipment, redundancy, skills, training, mindset, pretty much anything! This can also be relevant to accident-prevention, incident-handling, self-rescue, other-rescue, etc. Disclaimer: Per usual...

    Info DIY: Simple BCD Handle.

Today's DIY hack is ultra-simple. All you need is about 24-inches of webbing, and some Stainless Steel triglides. The basic idea is to create a handle for lifting, carrying, or hanging up your BCD. Pictures probably will do a much better job explaining this DIY hack than a description. 0)...

Tutorial: Custom sheath for Shears & Other Devices

Several months ago, I wanted a serious cutting-device capable of easily handling rope, and ended up buying some 10-inch shears. (more info in this thread) The first sheath I made ended up looking like this, and worked quite well. Features include a 2-inch slot for webbing in the back, a...

Opinions on Inline Regulator Shutoff Valves for SideMount Diving?

I recently acquired a pair of shut-off valves, which go between the LP-hose and 2nd stage. At first it seemed like a great idea; I could tune both regulators on the brink of free-flow, but shut off whatever I'm not using or in case of free-flow. I'm not attached to either side of the...

    Question DIY Paint Scuba Cylinders?

I happen to have several tanks, some with worn-down, chipped, or ugly paint. I also have some (no-bake) Cerakote, a extremely durable ceramic-based paint often used on guns, and was thinking my scuba-tanks would make a great practice-surface, and possibly some cool art-projects! The basic...

"Third" Powerhouse Cutting Tool (after 2 Line Cutters)

I currently have two line-cutters from DGX, including the ceramic one and titanium one. I love having these cutters, because they're easy to handle, not-drop, no stabby end, and use practically zero space on my harness. I'll probably swap out the ceramic for a 2nd titanium one, because the...

Did I get Screwed by Diveshop Hydro, who never inspected the tank?

The short story is I brought in a used 1988 tank for Hydro at a Scuba-shop. Normally I go to a fire-safety place, but I was in a rush. At the time I bought it about a year ago, I checked this thread and believed it to be the good aluminum. The VIP tech called me, and said they wouldn't hydro...

    Sidemount: HP Steel 117, 133, vs 149?

TLDR: Would you recommend I go HP 117, 133, or 149 for Sidemount? I've been diving Sidemount for a year, and figured it might be time to get some steel-tanks. The used market has been non-existent locally. So I'm considering new tanks. The reason I'm leaning towards bigger tanks is: Fewer...
