Another thing to think about with regard to shorties vs full suits is protection from stings and abrasion. I have a .5mm full suit for summer just to protect against those chance times when you're tossed against the rocks during shore entry/exit due to wave surge.
Personally, I've found the HRM to be so inaccurate as to be worthless. Compared to my chest strap monitors that I use for running and cycling the watch is so far off it's comical.
Once set up, I'm of the opinion to just leave it open. It's too easy to forget that you closed the valve, then you end up having to deal with it in the water.
