There are quite a lot of low budget 'backpacker' priced boats operating out of Khao Lak. Dolphin Queen (and the Similan Explorer run by the same team) are the only ones we book customers on. Good boats, very well run, people are always happy.

Well I've not done one for a few years, it's mostly diveshop/office work for me these days ... There's not that many boats to choose from, but I can tell you we had a lot of very positive reports this year about the marine life, lots of great diving it seems. Have a good trip!

This happened in Krabi and the speedboats were owned by a Krabi resort and a Krabi tour operator. So it did not happen in Phuket and the speedboats were not Phuket based. And they weren't dive boats. But for sure speedboats do drive too fast sometimes and go out in unsuitable weather conditions...
