Koh Lanta offers better variety of dive sites than Phuket, and shorter boat trips. Check out Hin Daeng/Hin Muang and Koh Ha. The dive centres also run trips to the Phi Phi dive sites...
If you want to get to Hin Daeng, I would fly to Krabi and stay on Koh Lanta - have a look at Lanta Diver. The day trips to Koh Ha are also very good...
Maybe have a look at Koh Lanta - it's a little bit off the beaten track, and you should find some nice peace and quiet to relax during your holidays. The diving is very good too, with Lanta being the best spot for access to Hin Daeng & HIn Muang - good spots for mantas and whale sharks.

Have a look at Lanta Diver...

Divemasters need to complete the full course - there is no option for skipping the first part as a DM, and you must be a DM before starting the IDC...
Not quite - it counts as the theory exams in the IDC, not the IE. All exams must be passed under exam conditions at the IE.
Yeah, there is no PADI crossover, you would have to complete the course performance requirements. But as rsingler noted above, as an experienced SSI DM, you could do a shorter version of the course. An SSI DM could start a PADI IDC, but cannot crossover the DM rating to become a PADI DM.
