Suggestions on where to stay in Moalboal

I'm surprised you didn't just walk down the road a bit and try QuoVadis, Blue Abyss, or farther down the road. Diving is cheap enough in Moalboal you could have just blown off the dives you paid for, and booked with another shop. This is my third trip to Moalboal, went with Blue Abyss again...

Shearwater AI transmitter in rec sidemount

Ok vanity item it is. In terms of the best routing you might look at adding a right angle adapter -> 6" hose to the manifold option to get it a little more stream lined and put a dedicated flat hose retainer band on the tank to keep the transmitter out of the way. It's another o-ring junction...

Shearwater AI transmitter in rec sidemount

I'm sure this has been said multiple times, but the whole AI thing looks like a solution for a problem that doesn't exist. What's the advantage over an SPG? You should already know your SAC rate, it will change over time but if you check it from your logs every so often you have a pretty good...

    Phuket in July/August = Resorts?

Thank you for the response I'll follow up with someone that works on the boat and post what they have to say here as well. Sorry for the Hijack, but this is concerning.

    Phuket in July/August = Resorts?

"Blue Corner, where divers who had 2 beers already in the morning are allowed to go diving because the owner is afraid of the agents?" Can you specify when this happened? I'm willing to ask about it to folks that work on the boat.

Try the beaches around Nai Harn which is near Rawai, they should fit the bill, but up to you.

Suggestions on where to stay in Moalboal

I've been out with Blue Abyss on 2 different trips, good enough operator, basic standard for the Phils Panga, 2 dives reasonable cost, local guides. Have stayed at the Blue Orchid (nicer but expensive), Bonita Oasis ( less expensive but friendly staff).

    Phuket in July/August = Resorts?

I think you'll find good food/bars in Rawai/Chalong and save yourself a lot of headaches trying to get to the dock in time for the boat in the morning. You can always rent a scooter and drive to Patong for a night out if that's what you want. Taxi's are a notorious problem area on Phuket. As far...

Where to retire in Thailand and Dive?

OP you will need to describe what else is important to you besides just quality of diving. How often would you like to actually dive? Are you on a budget or can you afford anything? What kind of visa are you thinking about? Do you prefer a city environment or more rural? How much hassle are you...

    Course progression to Tec diving

It's easy to bash PADI, SSI, etc for running to the lowest common denominator in their OW recreational courses. I won't begin to defend the way OW water courses are frequently taught. However, the PADI Tech course materials and the new SSI course materials in the hands of a good instructor are...

    Drysuit opinions

Can you get some help from one of the local FD's you do searches for? I'd be looking for something very durable with your described situation. The shop I used to work for carried the equivalent suit to the Fusion (same suit different brand) , I wasn't real impressed with how they would hold up...

Best instruction/instructors for basic and advanced wreck diving.

Given the OP's profile indicates less than 100 dives, I'd deviate here from going to the "best" wreck penetration instructors to start with. He's in New Mexico. I'd suggest he goes to the Cenotes and do the full cave course sequence. They have a lower silt content and are shallow so he can get...

Shoddy gear service- what would you do?

I would take it back to the original shop that did the service. Explain what happened, and ask them to redo the service on their dime. If they give you any flack at all it's their chance to lose a customer. I'm guessing based on your profile stated location that it was the dive shop in your...

Which pocket is best for back up mask?

Since you are a solo diver a lot of the underlying logic behind the which pocket you want it in has been removed. If I'm solo diving I use the same SM rig I take in wrecks/caves. I keep my spare mask in my butt pocket. The key thing here is put your gear in the same place every time so you don't...

BP/W with one piece harness NOT for everyone

Diving needs to be fun or you will give it up. If the setup causes you pain, it;s unlikely you will be having a lot of fun day after day. If you fail to have fun the outcome is likely you will take up a new en-devour and the industry will ever see you again. There are a number of solutions that...

    BP/W - APEKS vs Oxycheq

I travel extensively and have for many years. On single tank trips, I use the OMS AL (any will do I just got a very good deal on several). I have used DSS, a few other wings and the Oxycheq. (I use the Apeks SM rig for SM) My gear gets really beat, pack it right and the Oxycheq wing will pack in...

    DIY Jon Line - Comments?

The poster using the thumb spool has a good idea, change out the cave line for spectra spearfishing cord `1.7mm When I've been guiding groups on crowded lines in current (hard to quantify ripping current but lets just say to the point where you have to work a bit to keep your mask on) I'm able...

DUI CLX450 vs Santi E-Lite (or, Can We Please Fight About This?)

I have a TLS450 I purchased ~12 years ago, I got all the extra reinforcements, and dive it only with a BP/Wing. I just blew a ton of money having it updated at DUI, they last, can be repaired and really are durable. The price of zip seals drives me nuts. I just ordered a full set of Santi...
