Does This Look Like Brass to You?

The dive was incredible. This is the 8th time I have been on the wreck and visibility was in the 25-30 foot range even on the bottom at 130fsw. For more background info on the Mutsu, I updated Wikipedia with more detailed info. Here's the link...

    Best Dive Yet on Mutsu

The guys and I have already started talking about going back in June so I can do some filming of the area. And you're right, its the last real good visibility window to hit the wreck as long as the water stays cool. I'm not sure on a date yet, I'll have to check the tides. Let me know when...

Does This Look Like Brass to You?

This is a photo that I took the other day while diving the Battleship Mutsu. Its the range-finder for the 16" main guns and its been underwater for 63 years. Question, does this look like brass to you?

    Best Dive Yet on Mutsu

Well the guys and went and hit Mutsu on the 23rd and it was by far the best dive yet. Visibility was in the 10m range even at 40m and water temp was a balmy 60 degrees F at depth. Weather was perfect and even the seas were calm with no current. As usual, I planned the dive on a day where...

    USS Emmons

Words can't describe how jealous I am Thomas! I've been trying to get down to Oki for a year now to dive that wreck. Great video too! Scott

    Iwakuni diving

Hey guys, Sorry I've been away for so long! This is my first visit back to the Scubaboards in over 4 months! Yes! there is lots of diving to be had around here in Iwakuni. Most of which is around Oshima Island this time of year since its still too rough over on the Sea of Japan side...

    Thoughts on Taking Wreck Artifacts

Sure, you bet. I'm always happy to take any qualified divers on wreck dives with us. We're a small, tight-knit group here but we all love sharing our experiences with others. If you're ever in the Hiroshima area, look us up! Scott

Boat Diving -- When to Fin up

The way that my dive group and I do boat dives (especially when on MY boat) is fins go on in the water and are handed up to the person on the boat before climbing onboard. Just the way that we have always done it. Scott

    Thoughts on Taking Wreck Artifacts

One of the reasons that I have been so cautious to allow people to take artifacts from the site is the legal reasons. All the time I see articles on Underwater Times about wrecks being pillaged and looted and I most definitely to not want to cause any legal issues for me or the people that I...

    Suunto Mosquito

I have been diving my Mosquito for over a year now and logged well over a 100 dives on it. I jealously love this little computer for its simplicity and ease of use. The display is easy to read, and very straight forward. Only issue I have ever had with it is when night diving, it can be a...

    Why not more artificial reefs?

Don't forget that there occasionally the Navy has been known to just sink ships "SINKEX"for what has been hailed as use as an artificial reef but done in waters far to deep for recreational diving. For example, the USS Belleau Wood LHA-3 was sank off Hawaii last summer near a "pile" of...

    Thoughts on Taking Wreck Artifacts

I know that there are few wreck divers that think it's perfectly acceptable to pillage any wreck they come across. Especially when that wreck is a war grave. My question pertains to Mutsu specifically but could be expanded to include a few other sites as well I suppose. I have always had a...

    LDS pricing

That is how it is here as well. Provided that you can even FIND a scuba shop. Luckilly we have our own scuba locker on base but we don't offer retail yet. Scott

    LDS pricing

You guys should all feel lucky you don't live in Japan. LDS's here routinely sell gear for 50-100% markup from MSRP. Example, a set of Mares Volopower Fins MSRP $169.00 (last I checked) and this shop on Kyushu was selling them for $268.00. I don't think that anyone here would blame me too...

    air consumption versus depth

Piscean, I have been following this thread since it started the other day and I thought I might chime in as well. I know all too well what it's like to wrap your mind around a problem that's really annoying me. One of the things that I have found most of the time is that I spent most of my...

    ndl limit for 130 feet

Holy crap everyone I, and many others in the Scuba Locker here in Iwakuni owe a lot of apologies to a LOT of peolpe. The terminology used in the NAUI tables leaves a lot for interpretation, most specifically, the ADT (Actual Dive Time) and MDT (Maximum Dive Time). Sorry everyone. Scott

    ndl limit for 130 feet

Yes Kim, that is what NAUI, not me, is saying. You have to remember that deep diving is not what the NAUI tables are intended for and have been heralded as the most conservative recreational table around. I can't, and won't speak for the rest of the certifying agencies since I have had...

    ndl limit for 130 feet

Gary, I'm not trying to start an argument with you so please don't think I am. And again, you're quoting Volume 2, Chapter 9, Section 3 of the US Navy Dive Manual almost verbatim. All I'm saying is that the NAUI tables use Total Dive Time. Not Bottom Time as defined by the US Navy...

    deep sea detective show

I almost choked on my coffee after reading this. Sometimes I am very glad to be living in Japan so I don't get to see BS like this on TV. Anyway, after reading this I thought I might dig up some old data of mine for anyone who's interested in some of the REAL worst disasters of maritime...
