Any interest Diving Austin Area next weekend?

It's very nice today. I was out near the lake today, a little windy, but nice. Unfortunately, the water is just a little too cold for me, but I'm getting the itch to dive.

    Water temperature

Using a 7mm my tolerance is about 55F average temp at depth. However, if it's warmer outside (75+ with minimal wind), I'd probably go down to 50-51F.

    Purchasing a wet suit

Just get something that fits. I have two Henderson suits and like that both very much. They were good for the price.

No diving in the Bahamas other than on Nassau?

We dove with them in early June of 2006. One of the best run outfits going. They're smaller and very personal. They should be able to work around your schedule.

New to Austin looking for dive enthusiast

Scubaland services both Zeagle and ScubaPro. Welcome to Austin. I'm a Southern California transplant. The diving in Lake Travis is not comparable to that in California, but it's still fun and can be challenging due to conditions. I'm down to dive fairly often, but am iroincally heading to...

    Diving this week in Travis

Sorry guys, it's official, I'm sick. Hopefully I'll be able to dive next week. :(

    O-ring check

I always carry extra orings because I've been screwed before. I give it a quick visual and if it's bad, I replace it with one of my own o-rings. No biggy, you can buy 20 o-rings for like $2.

    snorkels ?

Only if a REALLY long surface swim appears to be involved. I don't particularly like them or use them. It obscures my leftward visibility and is annoying. My g/f won't dive without hers, mine is almost always left behind. I do snorkel though on vacations. Just don't think it's necessary for...

What is a legit logged dive?

I don't think it should be based on minutes. I've done several few minute dives that have ended in gear failure of my buddies or other reasons to call a dive. I logged one once so I would remember my stupidity. I thought I could pull of a 15-20 minute dive starting with 1300 PSI, and in...

    Newbie info

See what local dive shop works the best for you. Talk to the owners and instructors and see who genuinely is the most interested in earning your business and appears to run a good operation. I was turned on by a shop because the owner spent an hour with my g/f and I selling us on diving in...

    Diving this week in Travis

Let's wait until Wed or Thursday. I've developed a sore throat today and I don't know if it's allergy related (I think so because my eyes are scratchy too). I just took my allergy meds and if it goes away by tomorrow I'll be down for a Wed or Thursday dive. I've dove before on sore throats...

    Diving this week in Travis

I can dive, Tues, Wed, or Thurs, but need about a day's notice to pack my stuff and get clearance from the g/f. Propose a day and I can be there around 615pm.

Anybody going to Travis tonight after work?

I'll keep my eye on these threads and can come out whenever people are ready (barring I'm not traveling for business).

Casino Point Dive - Possibly Overrated???

Yeah don't get me wrong, I don't guage a dive solely on fish or or the size of them; some dives I do for coral, some for wrecks, etc. It had just been advertised to me that it would be a dive to look at fish and kelp. I appreciate the encouraging words, and think I just went on a bum day and...

Casino Point Dive - Possibly Overrated???

Yeah, nice bass pictures. I recently saw a grouper in Bahamas that was even bigger; kind of scared me. Unfortunately for us, if you added up all of the fish we saw on both dives, it wouldn't equal the size or weight of one of those bass :(

Casino Point Dive - Possibly Overrated???

Wow, awesome photos. Definitely encouraging for me to try again, but I'll probably do a weekday next time. I wonder if it's a time of year thing. I see yours is dated in May, which is probably the beginning of the dive season for most (water temps). By July, maybe there's just too much...

Casino Point Dive - Possibly Overrated???

Well it was great on the first dive. The second dive was way crowded, but I'm fine with that. As long as you stay away from those buoys near the staircase (classroom central), the actual diving doesn't seem crowded at all, and I can deal with the surface crowds.

Casino Point Dive - Possibly Overrated???

Yeah I figured it was just a bad day; I'm sure I'll give it another try, but there are a lot of boat dives in California that I'll have to do first. Thanks for the words of encouragement.

Casino Point Dive - Possibly Overrated???

Ok, please don't take this the wrong way, but two weekends ago I took Catalina Express to Avalon and dove Casino Point. I did two dives and was extremely excited. However, I felt like it had been over-hyped by everyone I talked to. Please let me know if my experience is just bad coincidence...
