I'm in dry suit territory as well, or in my case 7mm wetsuit/hood/gloves territory...northern Michigan, diving on shipwrecks in the Straits of Mackinac. I'd be at the opposite end of the spectrum from you. I've only had one dive outside of Michigan. :)

All summer long, the local dive shop by us hosts Wednesday night shore dives. Before the start of the season they post a list of the various dive locations they'll be going to each Wednesday. Show up at the dive shop by 6:00 PM, and then caravan to the dive location. It's all at no charge...

I didn't even realize this until I dove in Florida this December, and the dive operator called 70 degrees cold. I assumed he meant surface temp, but he meant the entire column. Um...cold??? :)

Surface temps might get that high. In late August this year, at 80-100' depth we saw temps in the low 40's. That was in the Straits, right by the Mackinac Bridge, so that would be representative of both Lake Huron and Lake Michigan.

Thanks for the advice, on the suit and on the wrecks. Understanding that "cold" is a relative term, what do you consider to be cold? I could bring the 7mm I do all of my dives in up here, but if our perceptions of cold are way off... :)

I agree. I've been freediving and taking pictures for decades. I got my scuba certification last spring, and after a summer of diving I've yet to take my camera with me.

Nearly all of my diving is in northern Michigan, in the Great Lakes and in some inland lakes and rivers. Surface temp in Lake Michigan and Lake Huron didn't get above 63° F last year. Nekkid just ain't happening. :shocked2:
