    Electronic Dive Log

Yeah, I tried out Scubaearth when I was first looking for an electronic logbook, and I was STUNNED by what a complete turd it was. It looked like they had a positive start with good potential, but it just...stopped. That was well over a year ago, and it looks the same and is just as slow and...

    Electronic Dive Log

I'm using the Diviac app, which is affiliated with the good folks here at Scubaboard, or vice versa. You can upload to the Scubaboard hosted site on your PC from your dive computer, or you can manually enter the data into either the website or via the Diviac app. For those who aren't 100%...

Where To Dive For Free, Getting The Best Out Of Your Investment

I'm in dry suit territory as well, or in my case 7mm wetsuit/hood/gloves territory...northern Michigan, diving on shipwrecks in the Straits of Mackinac. I'd be at the opposite end of the spectrum from you. I've only had one dive outside of Michigan. :)

    Logging Dives

I got certified just over two years ago, and felt much the same as you. My smart phone is always with me, so it made sense to me to use an app for logging vs. a paper logbook. I came across Diviac, and I've been very happy with it. It syncs up online, and it's pretty easy to export to Excel...

Where To Dive For Free, Getting The Best Out Of Your Investment

All summer long, the local dive shop by us hosts Wednesday night shore dives. Before the start of the season they post a list of the various dive locations they'll be going to each Wednesday. Show up at the dive shop by 6:00 PM, and then caravan to the dive location. It's all at no charge...

    Weight belt vs. Integrated weights

It sure is! I also noticed that it'd lose its impact when I'd put on my 7mm hood. A 2nd ankle weight, and back to balanced.

    Weight belt vs. Integrated weights

I struggled with getting to proper trim with integrated weights. No matter what arrangements of weights I tried, I was leg heavy. I considered a weight belt, but I truly could see how a weight belt would solve my issue. I wound up keeping the integrated weights, and shifted some weight...

Where to dive the Great Lakes

I didn't even realize this until I dove in Florida this December, and the dive operator called 70 degrees cold. I assumed he meant surface temp, but he meant the entire column. Um...cold??? :)

Where to dive the Great Lakes

I live in northern Michigan, in the northeast Lower Peninsula, and dive frequently with the folks at the Northern Michigan Dive Center. They're located in Cheboygan, at the mouth of the Cheboygan River, with easy access to the Straits of Mackinac Shipwreck Preserve. They have frequent charters...

    Pensacola Diver Shops

Circling back with a trip report. I dove yesterday with the folks at Viking. They were a pleasure to dive with. Extremely knowledgeable and safety minded. We dove on the three coal barges and on the Joe Patti. Vis was pretty bad. All of the high winds and rough seas had it looking like...

    Pensacola Diver Shops

Surface temps might get that high. In late August this year, at 80-100' depth we saw temps in the low 40's. That was in the Straits, right by the Mackinac Bridge, so that would be representative of both Lake Huron and Lake Michigan.

    Pensacola Diver Shops

Thanks for the advice, on the suit and on the wrecks. Understanding that "cold" is a relative term, what do you consider to be cold? I could bring the 7mm I do all of my dives in up here, but if our perceptions of cold are way off... :)

    Pensacola Diver Shops

Thanks. I should have figured. I'm used to smaller Great Lakes wrecks. Something that immense is difficult to imagine.

    Pensacola Diver Shops

I took your recommendation on Viking and just sent them an email. I'll be down the week between Christmas and New Year, visiting our son stationed there. I'm looking forward to a dive in waters warmer than what northern Michigan can offer this time of year. :D If someone were only going to...

    Rude Divers on the Boat

I agree. I've been freediving and taking pictures for decades. I got my scuba certification last spring, and after a summer of diving I've yet to take my camera with me.

    Rude Divers on the Boat

I'm a relatively new diver, and this thread had me wondering about established dive etiquette I might not be aware of. I really don't want to be "that guy", and possibly wind up as the subject of a story on this thread. :) A quick google search for "dive boat etiquette" brought up a ton of...

    Rude Divers on the Boat

The only "bad behavior" I've seen was from one "lady" on a charter on Lake Huron. She and her husband were both diving, but she paid far too much attention to any other healthy male with arms...because that's where she liked to blatantly rest her generous bosom. I was torn between several...

    Life's But One... Scuba Naked!

Nearly all of my diving is in northern Michigan, in the Great Lakes and in some inland lakes and rivers. Surface temp in Lake Michigan and Lake Huron didn't get above 63° F last year. Nekkid just ain't happening. :shocked2:

    Dive Gear

I became OW certified just last year. I was highly tempted to run right out and buy gear before even completing the class. I've been free diving for years, so I already had a good low volume mask and fins...but I was all fired up to get the rest of my gear. Fortunately for me, my wife...aka...

Do freedivers make better scuba divers?

It definitely helped me with the mechanics of moving through the water, and my comfort level at depth. I did find at first that I had to concentrate on breathing at all times. I would catch myself holding my breath, just because that's what I was used to. I really wondered if I'd still enjoy...
