Removing my 6' long hose for open rec diving- ideal length for open water?

I finally got in the water today after a few years off from the sport. The new hoses worked out well. 24" on the backup, 18" inflator, bumped up the SPG 2" so I can see it better, and the 5' primary just fits without a canister light. The hose is up in my right armpit, so not a lot of slack...

    A Testimonial (hard float)

Hey Dano, On the red hard float, can I strap a couple extra 2 pounders to do some buoyancy testing on a a buddies new rig? I'd love to have some extra lead available without having to swim back to the beach.

Losing your weight belt--Let us count the ways.....

I had one of the first weight integrated BC's. I can't remember the brand, but it was a tech diving wannabe rig with velcro weight pockets and a lot of d-rings. It was cool as you could get in 1998. I was down off La Jolla cove near San Diego and I started slowly floating up. What the heck...

    Hose retainers. Where and why?

Here's a better video with a much simpler knot. FF to 3:15 if you're in a hurry.

    Hose retainers. Where and why?

It doesn't need to break away. It's never clipped to a d-ring while normal diving. It's there to hold it while setting up gear, while on the surface, etc. Or if you are out of air and using a buddies regulator, you can clip it off. Why would you need to rip the bolt snap off the hose? If...

    Hose retainers. Where and why?

Yup, it's just thin nylon braid off a spool. I took a DIR fundamentals course and we re-did all my ties anyway. My instructor liked 4 wraps instead of 3. I had also gotten lazy and used a zip tie on something, and that was a big no-no.

    Mildly regretting a dive?

I've regretted diving hung over a few times. Once I thew up through my reg at depth because the surge was so powerful. The other time I was chumming the water on the surface from a hangover, wearing too much wetsuit, and diving from a 14' inflatable boat offshore in Hawaii seas. Makes me...

    Hose retainers. Where and why?

Sorry to highjack this thread, but I don't have that option under my avatar either. I had to join the DIR group, then leave. Now I'm an angelfish, whatever that means.

Shop recommendation Ft. Lauderdale/Hollywood/Miami for gear overhaul?

I just got back from dropping everything off at underseas sports. They're a little busy for the lobster mini season preps, but I'm going out of town, so no hurry for me. I missed the hydro truck by just a few minutes. If my tanks were empty they could have taken them, but they were full so...

    Hose retainers. Where and why?

So how do I get rid of the DIR label? I use a hogarthian rig, but I don't dive DIR rules. The gas math makes my head hurt and I'd rather use my dive computer on a rec dive.

Removing my 6' long hose for open rec diving- ideal length for open water?

Hoses are so cheap, I also ordered a 40" and a 70 degree angle thingy. I don't trust swivels with o-rings and a screw, too many extra failure points for me.

Removing my 6' long hose for open rec diving- ideal length for open water?

What the heck is that? I think it's maybe the light cable off the canister? It's really long, maybe it was floating up behind me.

Removing my 6' long hose for open rec diving- ideal length for open water?

I ordered new hoses. Some of my lengths were odd because I already had the hoses on hand. I bumped my SPG hose up from 24 to 26 as it's a bit of a stretch to see it. Back up is going from 30" to 24". I'm going to swap the 6' back to a 5' since I'm not using my canister light. Inflater hose...

Shop recommendation Ft. Lauderdale/Hollywood/Miami for gear overhaul?

I think I'm going to try brownies or underseas sports. Underseas has a pretty terrible website, so that may affect my decision just based on the fact that they didn't put much effort into it.

Recommend a dive flag (at least 12x12 for florida)

Is there a preferred type or brand of dive flag to tow along on a shore dive? I'm planning to use my 100' reel that I normally carry for a surface marker.

Removing my 6' long hose for open rec diving- ideal length for open water?

22 with a single? I just want to make sure I buy the right stuff. My hoses are 10-15 years old so I'd like new ones anyway. I probably scavenged the 30" from an old primary, but hard to remember 15 years ago....

Removing my 6' long hose for open rec diving- ideal length for open water?

Good ideas. So a 24" for the backup and 40 and elbow for the primary. I'll give that a go

Removing my 6' long hose for open rec diving- ideal length for open water?

yeah maybe I should keep the rig as is. I fine tuned it 10 years ago, but just jumping back into the sport I have to rethink everything.

Thanks for the input fellas. Snorkel is rarely used, but in hawaii at that location you have to kick out aways. Shore diving.....
