    Deaf divers.

My High-School GF was deaf (she was an Amazing lip-reader) and taught me a lot of ASL. I've gotten so many "free dives" at resorts down south, because I know ASL. I just let the shop guys know I can help out, and I get calls to the room to come down for a dive. Last time I went diving with a...

    Too good of a buddy?

Too good of a Buddy? I vote no.. When your Buddy dives with you, he's following your lead, and learning from your experience. If he goes out tomorrow, with a different group, with less experience than himself, then your leadership will be his background to lead the new group. In the...

    "Piece of Paper Syndrome"

I think I've spread my "thanks" to those who understood what I was trying to describe. (If I've missed one, pls PM me :) ) I'll add a couple of points here, and then I'll let it rest. 1) Just to clarify, Kirk and I have been Friends for 40 years... Seeing as neither of us is over 43, it would...

    Diving Without certification...

Sorry BJ, but I know of a guy who died because he sat down in his lawnchair on his front deck.... Of course the "out-of-control car" had something to do with it. :D ;) My point was merely to examine the "relative dangers" of a 15 ft. dive, versus those of say a "Discover Scuba" dive to 40 ft...

    "Piece of Paper Syndrome"

I believe that it should be the norm, for people who have a friend that they can trust to "show them the way" if that friend has both the Experience and Ability to do so, even if they haven't paid their money to some dive organization that will give an "instructor permit" to a chimpanzee if...

    "Piece of Paper Syndrome"

No, My point was, that while he doesn't have the "Pieces of Paper", he has more than enough "Real World" experience, to show me something I might not have enjoyed otherwise.

    "Piece of Paper Syndrome"

I've recently been posting in the Diving without Certification thread... http://www.scubaboard.com/forums/basic-scuba-discussions/331834-diving-without-certification.html and it came to me, that a lot of the posters advocating not to do it, are those with a vested interest in having...

    Smoking, equipment and AOW

Let's compare apples to apples here. My usual dive buddy smokes like a chimney. If you could put smoke in a tank, he'd have one in a second. But, the guy also runs Marathons! His SAC is MILES below that of an average diver. (Including me, a moderate smoker, who is in decent shape) Would he...

    Diving Without certification...

Re: my 15 ft. comment One thing that has been missed in the discussion, is the Duration of the Ascent. You can say that 1.5 atm could possibly cause an expansion injury under the right circumstances, and I won't argue the point, But!... If a diver is kicking off the bottom, and ascending to...

Ummm Yeah, :shakehead: that's what I said .. "you are at less than one added atm of pressure". .5 is less than one, correct?

    Diving Without certification...

I'll admit it, I did my first "Deep Dive/Wreck Dive" ( the Lily Parsons, near Brockville, Ontario) long before I ever got the Cert. But... It was with Two divers, whom I had been diving with for two years. Both had done that dive in excess of ten times each, and who knew My ability, and were...

    So, this is kinda weird...

Diving is like Sex.... Some people will follow you, just because you have the "biggest tank" ;)

    Diving Without certification...

Oh, and here's a "key point" from the Instructor who taught me to dive.... If your "buddy" goes down, after you give the signal for "up"; he's actually just given you the signal for "I'm an Idiot, and No longer your responsibility" :)

    Diving Without certification...

Given your specifics, I'd say Go 4 it, and welcome to the world of diving! You know waaay more than I did, tossed in to the pool in Jamaica after 30 min of "lessons" :) Given what you've said, and having seen HUNDREDS of ' Discover Scuba" courses all over the Cari bean, You're well ahead of...

    Oldest diver?

I dove in Varadero last year with a guy who was almost 70 (short a few months ;) ) .. He'd been certified for 2 yrs! (but he has 50 dives !) I'd take him as a buddy over Any of the 20 yr old's I've dove with! Dive experience is good, but Life-experience will teach you more!

At 15 ft, you are at less than one added atm of pressure, so if worse came to worse, you could dump the gear, and head to the surface, with very minimal risk of an over expansion injury. Seeing as you free-dive, you should be comfortable in the water, so that's to your benefit. When you think...

    A question for rescue divers

Going back to the OP's question.. One, because you are at the same depth, unless you have the lungs of Hercules, (or are 5 times the size of the victim) an over inflation cannot occur. The compressed volume of air in your lungs will be at the same effective pressure in their lungs( water in...

If you really want to mess up your "insta-buddy" start doing the macarena underwater, and see what they do! :D;);)

Bare Wetsuits - Pros & Cons?

I'm a Bare junkie.. I have the 2mm shortie for Cuba, the 3mm full for Ontario Summer, and the 7mm for those Ice dives. Maybe they just fit my body well, but I'm very happy with all three.

Chain Store v. Small Dive Shop

The only thing that kills me, (and since they can't carry everything, not their fault) is the limited selection at an LDS, but Only when they say "oh, we don't have that, but we can order it for you, and have it next week" If I wanted to order it, I would have had it shipped Fed-Ex overnite...
