    Lake Travis Scuba 7-25-10

Austin news, sports, weather, Longhorns, business | Statesman.com The Statesman has updated the story, but omits Ellen's brave contribution and still erroneously claims that law enforcement dive teams were involved. I've contacted the Statesman about the errors and omissions and suggested to...

Can dive masters and instructors solo?

"I would be surprised if a lawyer would take this on a "no-win, no-fee" basis. I would imagine the chance of winning the case is not good and scuba instructors aren't known for making huge amounts of money. I say this, because the student would be suing the instructor personally - I can't see...

    Problems with AquaWorld

I thought Aquaworld did a good job for me. They gave me enough instruction to handle the resort dive I would be doing and I had a blast.... But for the more timid, I don't think the resort program gives enough confidence before you hit the water. That is not so much a critque of Aquaworld...

    Problems with AquaWorld

My very first dive was a resort dive with Aquaworld in Cancun. It gave me the scuba bug and now I am a divemaster with almost 200 dives. I had have no complaints. I accompanied some family members a few years ago when they did their first resort dive with Aquaworld at Cancun. I felt it was...

Richard Pyle Video -- @#$% cold at 400'

I thought it was funny, in good part to the juxtaposition of the cursing with the helium induced cartoon voices. But all the constant chatter makes me not want to get into diving with com gear.

Can dive masters and instructors solo?

Well, that is a smart move by PADI. That makes it much easier for the instructors now. They can just say "you need to take the solo class and get certified before you dive solo." End of story. No more trying to explain the exceptions to the rule or the "do as I say, not as I do."

Can dive masters and instructors solo?

Mike, while you are correct, a personal injury lawyer is going to make one critical distinction. None of the other types of "non-recreational" diving you mentioned violate the tennets of PADI, NAUI, SSI. They don't say those other kinds of diving are forbidden. All those organizations say...

    Things you've found under water

A vase with a plastic bag filled with ashes - funeral urn? A small brass box that contained a crucifix, a small glass jar of ashes and bone fragments, a lock of hair and ruined remnants of photographs. (I wish people would not leave that kind of stuff where divers are likely to stumble...

Can dive masters and instructors solo?

Nemrod, your question of how is solo diving a bad example is a fair question. I meant "bad example" in the context of the allegations we are worried may be made against us. Ollie the Open Water diver goes and does a solo dive a week after you taught his open water class. He gets hurt...

Can dive masters and instructors solo?

I read with interest some of the posts on the issues posed by dive masters and instructors who solo. There is the theory that if a student sees them doing that, and emulates the instructor's solo diving and gets injured or killed, the instructor will be legally liable. I don't think a dive...

    redundancy equipment

For me: a decent size pony bottle; a main and back up light, a back up depth gauge in addition to my computer, two knives. I suppose a back up compass would be good, too, but I really try to avoid solo dives for situations where navigation is critical. Incidentally, this is pretty much my...

Why Don't you Have a Pony yet?...or ever

I dive with a pony, even with a buddy, because I dive in a low vis environment where it would be easy to lose your buddy in an emergency situation. When the **** hits the fan, I expect I may suddenly find myself solo. Problems with the pony: (1) it is a security blanket, gives false sense of...

Why I Don't Dive Oklahoma Lakes

If you do some quick internet research, you'll read of isolated incidents of alligator gar biting a human. Usually it is a foot or hand dangling over a boat. This can cause a bad laceration or puncture wound, but they let go of the human appendage and don't try to carry on with the attack...

Why I Don't Dive Oklahoma Lakes

Yes, they can hurt you if provoked. The small ones are shy. But I don't think they prey on humans, not even the big ones. I don't think their jaws open wide enough to use humans as a food source. But they can bite. If I saw one that big underwater, I would probably scream into my...

List your favorite Texas dive sites....

Lake Travis has some good dive spots: Mansfield Dam, Windy Point Public, Windy Point Private, Starns Island (it's a shore dive but you need a boat to get there), Tom Hughes Park. There are many more locations to discover if you have a boat. I have over a 100 dives there. Part of the reason is...

Question about boat charters on Lake Travis

I went with Tom's Dive and Swin on a rented pontoon boat to Starns a few years back. Any group of divers or dive club could do the same thing, go rent a pontoon boat from Just for Fun and spend half a day at Starns. That's all that Tom's did. I got a dive buddy with a boat. That's how I...

    DFW shop closes its doors.....

I buy almost all my gear from my favorite shop, where I became a dive master. Before them, I gave all my business to the shop where I got my open water. I pay more that internet prices, but when there's a problem, they take care of it, no questions asked, no hassle. Plus unlimited amounts of...

    Hey Austinites

Pisces closed after its properitor, Danny Fass, had enough of working behind the counter six days a week. He's retired and living in San Marcos. I was a semi-regular at the Pisces Wednesday Night Dive club in its last few years. I miss Danny and his shop a lot. We would all hang out there...
