I use Jack's when in Kona. Last time we were there the crew was great one day but horrible the next. I let the shop know and they comped some tanks for shore diving as an apology-I would give them another chance.
If you do stay at the Hilton be sure and get off the grounds to see the rest of the island. The Hilton is very beautiful-but in a not real Hawaii-Disneyland way. Makes me sad to think people come to Hawaii and never see the real thing.
No guide required, but if you want one on Maui-go out with ShakaDoug. You might want to consider looking for a condo (VRBO.com is a great resource). You get a lot more bang for your buck than staying in a resort. Don't miss the manta ray night dive on the Big Island.
5 Star Divers out of El Paso is going to be doing an open water class at Balmorhea that weekend. If your friend can get the book and pool sessions done we can do referral dives that weekend and you would of course be welcome to tag along and dive.

If you only have one week and you are going to spend most of the time diving go to Maui. The big island deserves at least 2 weeks. I like diving with Ed Robinsons on Maui. They also have a cottage you can stay in-of the beaten path but the price is right.
It is a matter of priorities. I travel a lot (Roatan, St Croix and Kauai this year, also Switzerland but that wasn't diving) however I don't have cable, I rarely eat in restaurants. I don't buy many "things". My coworkers are probably tired of seeing me in the same clothes and I drive my cars to...
What dates are you going to be there? I am going for my first trip to Kauai from the 8th to the 21st. I have a few boat dives booked but would love to do a few shore dives also.
