    Hawaii - Big Island

Sounds like open has made their trip already (would be great to hear a follow up post). For those looking to come to the Big Island I always mention that many great dive sites are easily reached from shore with a very short surface swim. It's always entertaining to watch dive boats leave the...

Best Time of Year to Go

I live on the Big Island and prefer diving spring through early winter as I just like the warmer water temps. But for reference, I was fine diving this weekend with no suit; water temps were in the mid 70's. Had a pod of about 70 spinner dolphins join us for the part of the dive, so that was a plus.

Big Island Operator - Can't Remember name

I think that was Seascape Diving aka Dive Esplongee (or something like that). They hydro'd some tanks for me before they closed. Never dove with them, but they seemed nice.

    Maui - Molokini Crater diving?

I would say Molokini can be a great dive, it all depends. I have dove there a few times and on one memorable dive we had a manta spend almost the entire dive somersaulting through our bubbles. I dove several days with B&B and would highly recommend their operation. The early morning diving is...

    Big Island Shore Diving

One dive site I didn't see listed on the map linked above is a beach called Ho'okena. I haven't dove there yet, but I routinely encounter divers there. It's a nice beach/small bay where you have a very good chance of encountering spinner dolphins as there is a resident pod that lives in the...

    I need your shark stories

My understanding is that those sand tigers that are found in South Africa have been known to attack. There they are known as Ragged Tooth or "raggies". I recall reading that somewhere and the article acknowledged that the Sand Tigers found off the East Coast were fairly docile.

    MAUI,HI - Tiger & Bull Sharks

Aaaaaand I seem to have jinxed Hawaii. Tiger incident here on the Big Island today, and I had taken my family swimming at the adjacent beach just yesterday. Tiger Shark Attacks 60-Year-Old Swimmer In Hawaii, Lacerating His Arm Still stand by the assertion that there's little to nothing to...

    MAUI,HI - Tiger & Bull Sharks

As far as I know, all Tiger shark incidents have involved snorkelers, surfers or swimmers, those on the surface. This seems to be the norm with most locations where shark incidents occur. I love diving in Hawai'i and wouldn't be concerned about Tiger sharks. Bull sharks are not present in...

    Big Island - Waikoloa

Regarding seeing the volcano erupt. You can go into Volcanoes National Park and do the tour (may or may not see any lava), but you can't go where the lava is flowing in Pahoa. People are getting arrested trying to get a peek at the lava floes, the National Guard is on site, and it's somewhat...

Who to dive with on Maui?

I would second shore diving with Shaka Doug, great guy and for a newbie diver, shore diving might be preferred. For boat diving, if your friend is in the Kihei area, you can't beat B&B. Great outfit, and if you don't mind getting up early they have a boat that leaves the harbor at sun-up. You...

Need tanks hydro'd on the BI, shop reccomendations?

Just moved to the BI and brought all my gear with me. I have 5 tanks coming due for hydro and vis and seems like a good chance to get acquainted with a dive shop. So looking for recommendations, any that have Ka'amaini rates are a plus (okay probably misspelled that, so go easy). I'm located...

Deaths at Eagles Nest - Homosassa FL

Many years ago when I was young, I bought scuba gear at a yard sale and taught myself to dive...solo. I didn't die (obviously) or suffer any mishaps, but I didn't know what I didn't know. I eventually decided education/certification was a prudent choice (besides, itwas getting harder to get...

Ft Lauderdale Area Dive Op/Dive Site Recommendations

Thanks for all the replies Muzikbiz, deepstops, bilsant & blackvans1234. I tyhink I have enough info among all the replies and it looks like hooking up with Gold Coast Divers for shore diving might be a good option. One last follow up question, I'm staying at the Hilton Ft. Lauderdale...

From the article....."The Necker Nymph claims "near-zero" environmental impact because its "positive buoyancy prevents the sub from landing on a reef".... Oh Really? Neat trick Mr. Branson, of course you can still plow into the reef head on ;)

    hey some questions on gear

Don't discount Craigslist or the SB Classifieds if you know what you are looking for. When I started out I bought some gear new and some used. Some of my better used Craigslist finds just FWIW: Zeagle Ranger BC-$75.00 Atomic Z2 Reg-$125 & Suunto Vytek-$100, both brand new (dive shop going...
