How would you propose to make the differences between agencies teaching methods and curriculum clearer to the uninformed? What sort of reference would you suggest to clearly delineate how one agency is different than another when at this point in time you can (for instance) take a 3 day...

Walter, what would you think about a third party independent testing of scuba divers...like a driver's license? You can take your instruction from any "school" but your ultimate testing for competence is done by an outside body. In that way the agencies & dive shops have someone outside...

Er...last time I checked the "edumacation" system still classified whale sharks as fish, not mammals in all 50 states (although I'm not so sure about Kentucky :) ).

Just make sure any dive you do has a starboard trending trajectory or is completely circular. :D

Basically we replace the standard "rubber watchband" type strap which often comes with a wrist mount compass with pieces of narrow (1/4" or so) diameter bungy which you can pick-up Home Depot, Lowes, etc. off the spool by the foot. My Suunto had a rubber boot wrist mount...I pulled the strap...

It would be interesting to have a "rate my instructor" website along the lines of the "rate my doctor" and "rate my teacher" websites. With a good enough sample size either positive or negative for any single individual it might be another self-regulation option. Most of the sites I've seen...

Skip breathing can cause CO2 build-up which will give you a major headache and nausea...it's not pleasant at all. It can feel like caffeine withdrawl + food poisoning for a time. I'd suggest that you really pay attention to your breathing rate on you next dive and watch that you keep breathing...
