Split from: Diver Death in Cayman

How would you propose to make the differences between agencies teaching methods and curriculum clearer to the uninformed? What sort of reference would you suggest to clearly delineate how one agency is different than another when at this point in time you can (for instance) take a 3 day...

Walter, what would you think about a third party independent testing of scuba divers...like a driver's license? You can take your instruction from any "school" but your ultimate testing for competence is done by an outside body. In that way the agencies & dive shops have someone outside...

I was thinking there are all sorts of options which you likely already have on hand...but you mean the boltsnaps are being used for diving...oh...sorry. :whistling:

    Snorkeling with the whale sharks

Er...last time I checked the "edumacation" system still classified whale sharks as fish, not mammals in all 50 states (although I'm not so sure about Kentucky :) ).

Deep Diving - Safe bottom air pressures

but, but, but...I have a buddy who's at the same level as me and we have a trip planned and we want to do it now, you've already run the numbers for us and that spear fishing guy would have had like 7 cubic feet left after his dive if he was using an AL80, and we could always bribe the tank...

Where do you have your compass?

Basically we replace the standard "rubber watchband" type strap which often comes with a wrist mount compass with pieces of narrow (1/4" or so) diameter bungy which you can pick-up Home Depot, Lowes, etc. off the spool by the foot. My Suunto had a rubber boot wrist mount...I pulled the strap...

It would be interesting to have a "rate my instructor" website along the lines of the "rate my doctor" and "rate my teacher" websites. With a good enough sample size either positive or negative for any single individual it might be another self-regulation option. Most of the sites I've seen...

    Help me understand underwater communication

The foundations of underwater communication for recreational scuba divers are universally recognized hand signals. These are often supplemented with light signals (using the beam of flashlights to get attention or ask simple status questions). Some people add underwater slates or wetnotes...

Well, that was a new one...

Zip ties are the plastic straps that tighten when you feed one end through the little square box on the other end. They can make a "zipper-like" sound when being tightened. Also known as zap-straps or cable ties. Cable tie - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

    Occasionally feel weird after dive

Skip breathing can cause CO2 build-up which will give you a major headache and nausea...it's not pleasant at all. It can feel like caffeine withdrawl + food poisoning for a time. I'd suggest that you really pay attention to your breathing rate on you next dive and watch that you keep breathing...
