    In Langkawi (Pulau Payar), I know that some DMs there are full time and obviously paid. There are also part timer DMs who just get their diving for free. If you PM me I can give you a contact for a Japanese guy who runs an opration there and may be able to give you more detail.

    no mask/ read gauges?

    The hand cupping technique works until you need reading glasses built into your mask just to be able to see your guages in normal circumstances. Try making a tiny pinhole by curling up your fore finger. This works underwater, despite distance, astigmatism etc. Reasonably good light helps.
