    Do you carry a knife?

Don't carry a 'knife' but do carry 2 to 3 'dive tools' each of which has cutting ability. (form of answer is out of respect to my first instructor in 1970 who kept telling us over and over that "IT'S NOT A KNIFE... IT'S A DIVE TOOL'... )

    Where did you dive today?

On the 25th, did a couple of dives in Haigh Quarry (getting used to diving doubles)... 50 FOOT VIZ... for any who know Haigh... you could see the entirety of the Flamingo from some distance away... you could see the bottom (rocks, platform and everything) of the "deep hole' fom 61 feet...

    50+ year old divers

... jus an update. 57 and lookin' 58 in the ol' hairy eyeball. Last dives were my FIRST doubles dive with twin 100's done at Mermett Springs in Illinois (yes... I did a swim through in the sunk 727). Starting in Jan of LAST year, myself and a guy in the shop who's got 5 years on me (62)...

    58 years young--what can I expect ?

My wife is 59... got certified at 57... If you're in good physical shape... then "yes, you can..."... Now, she dives within her limits... no matter how much in shape we are at this age... we can't always keep up with the youngin's... but this isn't about keeping up... it's about buddies...

    Tricks of the trade

Thaks Luis... nope... using a dilution (50/50) vinegar and water... basically just running it unitl they clean up then transfering to a clean water bath. The cylinder doesn't look bad from what I can see... I need to get a better light system... but, at this point, I've been through the...

    Tricks of the trade

Ok... I'm rather new at this vintage scuba stuff... tonight the tech at my LDS and I started going through an overhaul of a 1976 vintage Fenzy (I assume that's the date... it's the hydro on the bottle)... Needless to say, parts didn't part like they were new... some parts flat didn't want...

    Best drysuits

Ok... so a question to those who use dry suits a lot more than we tend to in my neck of the woods. I'm currently diving an OS using the Pinnicle Evolution undergarment. Seems to work pretty well. Flexible but I'm not sure I'd want to use this on the rocky coasts of Maine (although I could be...

    Tough Buddy Separation Problem

The "best plan"... the best plan is what years of experience by hundreds of divers had evolved into and is taught in dive classes... "Look for one minute and then surface safely"... The thing is I think you're looking for some sort of universal "better mousetrap"... and you won't find it...

    What does "Experience" really mean?

"Experience" is knowing what hurts... "Knowlege" is knowing how to use your experience to avoid what hurts... "Wisdom" is knowing when it's a good time to use your knowledge and experience to help someone less experienced to avoid the things you've learned the hard way... and, umm...

Discussion topic - buddy separation protocol

If you didn't bring one with ya' it seems to me that your options to do anything else would be rather limited... :rofl3: ... but that's why good scouts are always prepared... the problem with the unanticipated situation is that... well, they're *unanticipated*... all you can do is to...

Can a BC be used as a rebreather in an emergency?

Interesting to note... the ol' Fenzys were set up the same way... and, at least according to their web site... the NEW Fenzy BC (military) actually is set up to allow you to breath off the oral inflate tube without having to push buttons...

Discussion topic - buddy separation protocol

Excellent points... However, the purpose of protocols and plans, as I understand them, is to provide a framework for problem resolution that gives the highest probability of favorable outcome and reducing the chances of poor decision making "in the heat of the moment"... Violation of these...

    Tough Buddy Separation Problem

    Tough Buddy Separation Problem

... but let me comment anyway... In the OTHER thread that's going on relating to what to do about a lost buddy... I'll repeat what I said there... "TWO VICTIMS DOES NOT A RESCUE MAKE"... You follow whatever protocols you agreed to... (... unless you omitted them too...)... ... my...

    Tough Buddy Separation Problem

Sounds like a scenerio where Darwin is about to take a lead role... You've identified SO many bad practices and bad decisions in this scenerio as to make commenting on the them impossible ... ... too many "omit" this and "omit" that for me to reach any possible conclusion other than I have...

Lost a weight pouch, Dang It!

Absolutely right... that's why all of us who started diving in the 60's and 70's are dead... the weight belts got us... :rofl3: :rofl3: :rofl3:

Discussion topic - buddy separation protocol

The problem with all of the above is the word *assume*... let's look at it a bit closer... If you're diving and suddenly look around and realize you're missing your buddy... what do you KNOW? 1. Buddy is not present. 2. If you and your buddy are competent you're both diving the...

Discussion topic - buddy separation protocol

Ok... let's try this again... WHY is the safety stop even in question? If it's a simple separation issue the "lost buddy" should be doing a SS anyway which... assuming you both realized each other got lost at about the same time... would put both you and your buddy on the surface at about the...
