    How cold is too cold?

Although I'm pretty sure 99% of the population will figure it out, I just have to clarify. Pre-dive When stating "put hot water" into your suit, only put hot (basically anything over 55 celsius, 131 Fahrenheit) water in if you are NOT wearing your suit. If wearing your suit, I would...

    PADI Tec Instructor

As a matter of interest why do you not recommend TDI? And to comment on the DSAT Tec... I was reviewing the course standards and PADI Tec Deep and Tec Trimix manuals from 2000 (and the printed off course requirements from around 2002) and compared them to what is available today. They really...

    Differences Between UTD and GUE

There is a particular thread which compares UTD training versus TDI that I found extremely interesting. I recommend anyone interested go check that out. I also have had very interesting and informative dialogue with Todd Powell from UTD. I definitely find that their approach is very more...

    Drysuit tryout dive help

One reason is if you are planning on doing deeper dives, neoprene suit lose some of their insulating qualities as pressure increases (the air cells in the neoprene get compressed due to pressure - this results in a thinner layer seperating 'you' from the 'cold'). There is much to see around 60 -...

    Vancouver, BC - Roll Call

I used to be an instructor around these parts, then I took off to Bonaire for 2 years. I came back to Vancouver 2 years ago; finally settled in after finding a job and getting my own place. Getting back into diving again, and looking to hopefully get into tech in a year or so. I got my...

    Crabbing

...since I was last crabbing in this area, but aroudn the Wreck of the VT100 usually yielded a couple or so. Also, there is a spot about a kilometer north of Porteau Cove... but it is a very difficult entry (at least where we went). Red rock crabs may be more work, but they have a...

    Differences Between UTD and GUE

Thanks for the links Blackwood, I'll check those out tonight. For those interested I found these websites to provide some interesting material. It does look like the whole GI / AG thing started more on a he said / she said thing... someone please update me if I'm missing something. Ratio...

    Differences Between UTD and GUE

It's been a while since I was last really into diving (damn life), and I see a new comer on the block with UTD. What exactly is the difference between them and GUE? From what I've read to this point they just seem to be less rigid. But how exactly? What perturbed these former GUE folks to...

    Spotted Eagle Ray behaviour

I saw 2 spotted eagle rays jump the other day, and previously I saw 3 jumping many many times. It is really weird to see these graceful creatures as once they are out they flap their wings and try to fly... quite amusing!!! I wish I had a camera so I could take pictures!

    Spotted Eagle Ray behaviour

I am currently travelling through the Caribbean, and have seen spotted eagle rays jumping out of the water. Is this something they do for fun, a part of their mating ritual, or is it them just trying to avoid predation? Any help or links to professors or universities will be appreciated...

    Stage Bottle

Wow, thanks for the quick response everybody. Your suggestions are duly noted. One note though: I am interested in taking DIR-f, I believe my skills are working their way up there. However, what I don't think you may understand is I am now in Bonaire. DIR does not exist down here... yet...

    Stage Bottle

So, I have a few questions... and as they can fit under a few topics (DIY, Tanks, Regs, Tech, DIR), I decided Basic Scuba Discussions was a good place to start. Mods feel free to move it if you want. A bit of background info. I am slowly working my way into tech diving, slowly as I am...

    PADI TecRec

"Any instructor out there that is teaching to the minimum standard is doing a disservice to their clients. We need to do away with the concept that the standard is what is done and nothing else. If an instructor feels there needs to be more to a course then they can simply add it. The quality of...

    Hello Polly, Polly Parrot???

"Yeah, remarkable bird the Norwegian Blue, beautiful plumage, innit?" "The plumage don't enter into it -- it's stone dead." Just thought I'ld enter some Monty Python whilst we wonder about scubaboard's "bloody dead" parrots... he he
