    diving with canon a85

Here's what I start with on the A70: "P" mode, flash off, exposure compensation: -2/3 , white balance: cloudy, ISO: 100, light metering: center weighted, red-eye reduction off, AiAF frame selection: off, AF assist: off, digital zoom: off, review: 2 seconds, resolution: maximum, superfine...

    Canon Flash?

More light is almost always better. The problem it that sometimes you'll get backscatter from stuff floating in the water. Dialing down the flash can help (I'm not sure if your camera can do it) as can getting in closer to your subject. For the wide angle stuff (as in anything more than 4'...

New Canon A85 User needs help

Congrats on your new camera. I have the A70 and love it. I wouldn't bother with the lenses (the link didn't work so I'm not sure exactly what kind of lenses). There's plenty to play with on the bare camera. If you're talking about a macro lens, then you'll have to change out your housing...

    first a95 pics

Great pics. If you hadn't said it was your first time, I would have never guessed.

    Protecting my housing

My little camera seldom goes more than a week without getting wet, but I'd say take the O-ring out. CD cases are just about the perfect size for the O-ring, then put both the CD case in a ziplock bag.

    crescent bay tomorrow...

Deadman's was 10-15 on Sunday with some moderate surge. There's still some red tide lingering throughout Laguna but it seems to be spotty.

    Protecting my housing

The Pelican cases are great, but a bit pricey. I went with a non-waterproof case from Platt (the makers of Pelican cases) and it's worked great over the last year. They come with the "pick and pluck" foam so you can customize the case to fit your camera and housing. It's not designed like...

    About Canon O-Rings

Almost 200 beach dives on my A70 and no problems yet--knock on wood. I changed out the main o-ring at about 130. Anyone ever change out the other rings?

    Housing maintance pre/post dives

I have the A70 and grease the O-ring every 2-3 dives. Just be sure you are cleaning it and not adding lint to the ring. After the dive, it immediately goes in a bucket of fresh water--do not let it dry out until it has soaked in fresh water

    Help with photoshop

The easiest way to avoid the blue is not to get them in the 1st place. Try using manual white balance and no flash (this is very effective in shallow water where there's plenty of light). If you're stuck trying to salvage the pic, the "levels" or "curves" function in Photoshop is a simple...

    retractor for camera

I use a retractor and a double end clip for entry/exit and a lanyard when I'm shooting. By using 2 clips, the camera doesn't bang around. The double ender goes on my right shoulder D ring and carries the weight. The retractor goes on the left shoulder webbing down near the bottom and pulls...

    Bizarre Fish Behaivor

That's normal, nothing wrong with those fish... When I had an aquarium many of my fish were floating belly up.

Handy little PS action for correcting UW photos.

Cool double rainbow shot! Also, there's a few other "automatic" actions you might try (right here on Scubaboard): http://www.scubaboard.com/cms/article37.html

    white balance

For those of us without RAW... Here in SoCal I change the WB frequently--especially right now as we've got some lingering clouds of red tide. You should reset anytime your available light changes (depth, shadows, clouds overhead...) This is more important when going from less light to more...
