Another fatal record attempt in Lake Garda, Italy

The question is if your VO2 max results won't be impacted by spending already 3 hours in the water (being tired)?

Another fatal record attempt in Lake Garda, Italy

The results were not conclusive. Probably because no lung damage occured in the test subjects. What the case wanted to test was if there are alternatives for testing lung damage. At that moment (and maybe still now I don't know) the industry standard was a spirometry test of the lungs before and...

Another fatal record attempt in Lake Garda, Italy

I once was part (guinea pig) of a scientific test in a controlled environment. The purpose of the study was checking real pulmonary damage when breathing high PPO2 levels for extended times. We were 15 divers breathing nitrox levels at 1.6 PPO2 in a 15m pool for 3 hours plus. Before the dive...

Another fatal record attempt in Lake Garda, Italy

Totally off topic Trace but in 2019 and 2020 I read up a lot on the moon race and it's slightly more complicated than that. There was more calculation behind Kennedy's speech. Part of it was real politik and the fact that the technology race (which the space race a very public presentation of...

Question How to improve dive skills as a rec diver - alternatives to GUE fundamentals course

Could be or more likely I have the people skills of an angry hippo, and just don't "read" the delicate signs of disapproval, discust or whatnot. :p In any case with 1 or 2 exceptions, I've never noticed a negative vibe in the last 10 years. Before that for sure, but I believe people had good...

Question How to improve dive skills as a rec diver - alternatives to GUE fundamentals course

I also have some GUE apparel lying around (t's, sweaters, stuff like that), most in a half destroyed state. I don't get new ts because I'm not subscribing every year anymore. Same with IANTD stuff and even some CMAS stuff. I have some stuff from ghostdiving, healthy seas, some projects, sea...

Question How to improve dive skills as a rec diver - alternatives to GUE fundamentals course

This is actually a very good idea, specially in a Belgian context. Most people tend to dive in non commercial clubs, or affiliated to the local CMAS chapter or to another agency. Also most of the Belgian GUE divers retain their membership (and something are still very active) in their local...

Question How to improve dive skills as a rec diver - alternatives to GUE fundamentals course

Pm me if you want to get in touch with GUE-BE (although probably Peter pointed you already in that direction). Before I left for Italy they were super active and organised at least 1 dive per week, most of the time more. Diving wet the season will be a bit shorter in Belgium for obvious...

Question How to improve dive skills as a rec diver - alternatives to GUE fundamentals course

Wooow someone got his "jimmies russled a bit" and is feeling a bit sore ;-) Wooohoooo bad GUE BAD GUE!! Do agree on rec3 though that's a stupid course!

Why not attach spool to DSMB before the dive?

I was trained to assemble. It's what is the procedure during a fundies course, main reason however is to add workload to you, while you need to maintain trim, position, depth, and keep awareness (eye contact with buddies). However in day to day wreck diving I keep the spool attached to the SMB...

Why not attach spool to DSMB before the dive?

I'm sorry but my experience is different and things don't always go to plan. I witnessed the boat crew losing a team (perfect storm of current picking up, crew seeing another team arriving on the surface while on the port side of the boat a small smb pops up on the starboard side while they are...

Not allowed to dive without drysuit certification ;-)

Nope my fundies card doesn't state anything regarding drysuit, it's been a while tho, so probably the reference on the card has been altered.

Not allowed to dive without drysuit certification ;-)

To be frank I even have friends who used to work as dive instructors in Iceland (so mainly silfra diving) and I didn't ask them anything as well. It really was a last minute decision, my mistake ;-)

Not allowed to dive without drysuit certification ;-)

Heya Pedro, no they didn't ask that at all, just like they didn't ask about insurance (I have both the yearly medical as an instructor and Dan Europe insurance). Maybe I only needed to pass that hurdle after the drysuit certification topic, which I didn't pass, so actually no idea.

    Workmanship of different drysuit brands

One of the 3 suits I have is an old CF200. Very good for tight wreck diving, never really dove it in caves though, using other suits for that. Agree with everything you say on it. Regarding trilaminate and thermal protection, well that's a function of the undersuit. There are undersuits who...

Things Scuba Instructors teach that are either bad or just wrong.

That is actually true ;-) I do look at the spg when (slowly) pressurising an O2 stage or the O2 on the rebreather.

Not allowed to dive without drysuit certification ;-)

No idea, the package always includes a drysuit. They don't allow wetsuit dives there. I also didn't bring a drysuit... didn't plan on diving, but yeah maybe if I had shown a well worn drysuit I might have convinced them that I can actually dive it. ;-)

Not allowed to dive without drysuit certification ;-)

I checked all my online cards (everything from GUE, IANTD, CMAS/NELOS, TDI) and on none of them is mentioned anything related to drysuit diving. I could easily have gotten (still that day) a drysuit cert from a bunch of different agencies via instructor friends... but that was too late (leaving...

    Workmanship of different drysuit brands

Everybody just mentions what they dive. Most have only dived/owned a limited number of suits, so getting objective opinions are hard. I understand that I'm actually not helping :-p But I'm refusing to mention the 6 different suits I've dived over the years. I would look at material (strong...

Not allowed to dive without drysuit certification ;-)

Heya all... Not sure if this should be in the "scandinavia/iceland" forum or not (if so please move, thanks mods). I've just returned from a beautiful 15 day trip to Iceland with my family. We enjoyed ourselves immensely, seeing parts of the west fjords, the north, whale watching, a lot of...
