    Z2 hum/rattle on exhale

You're absolutely right. To amend my earlier comment - it's not uncommon to hear a honking on inhalation and more of a raspberry sound on exhalation on a regulator that has been dry for some time. The solution is the same - get them wet.

    Z2 hum/rattle on exhale

Sometimes the exhaust valves on a second stage get a little dried out and adheres slightly to the reg body resulting in a humming or even goose like honking sound. A couple of minute in water usually solves the issue. If you're worried about it pressurize them on a tank and dunk them in the...

Time For Some Industry Standards for Dive Computer Alarms

Ah.. I think I see the problem. Take a look at rock bottom gas planning. You should always *plan* on your buddy declaring on OOA at the worst possible moment and have sufficient gas to handle the situation. If you deplete your own gas supply to the point where this causes a problem then you...

Time For Some Industry Standards for Dive Computer Alarms

New divers with fancy computers... The majority of the people I dive with use simple bottom timers, not computers. If a regular dive buddy showed up with a computer that started making noise they would be encouraged to shut the confounded thing off or get rid of it. Plus with backgas, stage...

Nitrox App for iPhone 5 wanted

The built in calculator app does everything I need. MOD, ppO2, EAD, partial pressure blending, even best mix should I be inclined ;)

The only gear you have is a dive watch...

Assuming the computer wasn't reset between users which would be best, all this does is limit the second divers bottom time. It makes the second divers profile more conservative. It's the other way around that you have to worry about from a DCS perspective - "I lost my computer on dive 1, may I...

The only gear you have is a dive watch...

Yep, easy enough to just remember the ndl tables and do min deco. Alternatively if your memory is not so good but your wallet is thick there are some nice watch sized dive computers... This is assuming the rental reg has some kind of depth gauge on it...

    igills new iphone case

Your experience with your GoPro is no failures out of 20 dives to 130'. Most of us that have been diving for a while have had a camera flood. How many dive computer floods do you hear about? They do happen - those user changeable batteries have O rings and are just as susceptible to assembly...

This seems like a gimmick to separate nerd boys from their cash. If it makes them happy then power to them.

    deco regulators - apeks?

The xtx50 makes a great deco reg. I prefer a turret/swivel on my deco regs but non-turrets work as well possibly with a slightly longer hose. Im using mk10/g250's for deco and my bg regs are Apeks. I do end up stocking more parts kits than when I was all Apeks.

Are you wearing snorkel while SCUBA diving?

Snorkeling is a wonderful and fun pastime... Oh wait, we're talking about scuba diving... I teach therefor I own a snorkel and am proficient in its use. For ow dive students I see value in doing the snorkel regulator exchange swims - it gives them the opportunity to practice reg clearing while...

    Could this be DCS?

When the lungs squeeze down, compressing the nitrogen you have the same pressure of gas as a person who inhaled at that depth from a scuba cylinder. The exposure times are short, but the ascent rates are quite fast. From the United States Apnea Association FAQ: United States Apnea...

    Could this be DCS?

As the free diver descends water pressure compresses the lungs and thus the air inside. You are correct that there are the same number of nitrogen molecules in the free divers lungs but they are now at a higher pressure and can elevate tissue pressures and potentially cause dcs. Not so much at...

    Who's using 100% O2 for deco?

Y'know .. you can always buy your own booster, they're not *that* expensive compared to everything else in this hobby. Particularly if you divide the cost across a couple of tech diving buddies. Personally my answer to a weekend of diving is to just bring two alu40's, whether they be filled to...

Body found in Lake Tahoe possibly diver missing 17 years

I missed this in my previous read of the thread. I've done a number of dives in Tahoe in this depth range. The deco does add up but it's a calm environment. The oxygen stops are particularly nice - relatively warm water near the surface, calm, no real current, usually a nice sandy shelf to...

    Who's using 100% O2 for deco?

Hi Jax, I was responding to the original poster, but due to the timing of when our posts went up it looks like I was responding to you. I was not trying to tell you to use 100% because everyone else does. In fact, not everyone else does, just most everyone I happen to know :) Rainers...

    Who's using 100% O2 for deco?

In my NAUI, TDI, IANTD, and UTD classes we used 100% and I can't recall the last time I did a dive with someone who doesn't use 100%. The only argument that makes even a little sense is if you have 2400 psi supply bottles, 3000 psi deco bottles, and no booster. 2000 psi of oxygen in alu 40...

Body found in Lake Tahoe possibly diver missing 17 years

Hi Mike, As far as I know it wasn't anyone in our group. I did a 330' on Rubicon a while back right off the point and didn't see the gentleman. May he rest in peace.

i keep going back and forth oxycheq or dive rite?

If you're seriously interested in the DSS wing but concerned about whether it will work with a DR backplate I can take my DR aluminum plate, put my DSS wing on it, and take some pictures for you. Normally my single tank wing lives on a steel halcyon plate and my doubles wing is on the alu plate...

    Halcyon wing worth the extra

I used to own a Halcyon single tank wing and never had an issue with the center of lift shifting inappropriately. I was pretty happy with it up until a deck hand punctured it :(
