    Reef House "Resort"

Very strange review. Where was Mike? He is always around and making sure everything is going well. Maybe he had an emergency? No turtles for years. That's just not true.

    relocating to utila in april

I spent 4 months or so on Utila in 2006. I became a DM and then Instructor while there. Like you, I left the rat race (at age 61) for a change of pace and the experience was probably the best of my life. I shared a very nice 2 bedroom apartment with an English guy I met on my second day...

    relocating to utila in april

Your question makes me wonder how much research you've done about Utila. It's very tiny and only has a few thousand residents. It's a fun and interesting island but there is really nothing there except a few very basic hotels, a few restaurants and several dive centers. There are also several...

    Nekton boats may come back!!

Poor mooring for liveaboards are a problem in many places. Several of the wrecks in Truk Lagoon have been torn apart over the years when various liveaboards used to hook onto them. I could be wrong but I think the Nektons are much heavier than other liveaboards too making them even worse.

    Caribbean Liveaboard

I can't comment on all about prices. Since your time frame is limited you are pretty much stuck with whatever prices are available that time of year. I've been on all 3 liveaboards you mention and enjoyed all of them but the Utila Agressor was the best diving and crew. There is no way you...

    Nekton boats may come back!!

I gotta believe these boats are fuel hogs and expensive to maintain. I worked on the Pilot for a short time long before it failed and it was a disaster. So many things were broke the so called engineers couldn't keep up. I say so called because the "trainee" we had was a guy found on the...

Using Skype from Roatan to USA

I used Skype from both Utila and Roatan with great success. When I lived in Roatan, I took a Packet 8 (like Vonage) device with me. I activated it in the US and had a US number. I made and received calls on a normal telephone (wireless) with only the monthly fee. Worked even better.

    Possible to work.

I hope your right but these rumors have been on the radar for at least 3 years and nothing has happened yet. Camp Bay is pretty darn remote, the road isn't the greatest and there are few places to stay and eat. Not exactly a recipe for a successful dive operation.

    Possible to work.

There are almost always a few jobs available because turnover is high. Few if any pay a decent wage. Your pay will be dependant upon the number of students you teach. If you speak English and Spanish you'll have some advantage. Other languages are a huge plus. Dual citizenship will also be...

Fiji Trip Report - Matangi Island

I've been to a lot of islands and didn't find Matangi all that warm. It's a small island with plenty of breezes and the bures are very close to the water. We didn't have any bug issues at all. Tipping is not expected in Fiji. They have a childrens Christmas fund where tips are stored. We...

Reef House Trip Report and Slideshow

Loved the pictures and report but I thought I'd make a couple of comments. The atmosphere - real homes and real people - are what make RHR so special. Roatan is a real place with real people that live in poverty every single day. I think the bay behind the resort is one of the most...

Starting to plan a trip to Truk/Chuuk - help please

October 2008; Dec2008/Jan 2009; and Dec 2009 --are the last three times I've dove with the current manager of the Truk Lagoon Dive Center: when was the last time you were there "Chuck to make a fair & informed opinion? Have you even met the present manager Kelvin Davidson, and how do you claim...

Utila Lodge has a "twofer" deal thru July 2010

That's a great deal in a nice place right on the water. Utila is a terrific place too.

Shore diving off Reef House Resort?

The house wall is a terrific dive. Many dive operations over the years have gone to their house wall during the normal course of weekly diving. As the post above indicates, it is sometimes difficult to access but even more often, it is just a simple swim from the concrete pier. Sometimes...

Starting to plan a trip to Truk/Chuuk - help please

I'm not sure I agree that you visit a wider variety of wrecks on the Odyssey. Both Truk Stop and Blue Lagoon will take divers to any and all wrecks in the lagoon. The statement about the experienced technical guide at Truk Stop has been true for the last couple of years but can't be depended...

Quick Poll - Your Favorite Place To Stay in Roatan

I voted for Reef House but I've stayed at Paya Bay, Anthony's and the defunct Bay Island Beach Resort. I've also been on the various liveaboards in the area 5 times. I'd choose the liveaboard every time if cost weren't an issue. The Aggressor offers better food than most places, easier access...

decisions decisions...Need help/advice on where to go

I spent a week on Moorea a few years ago and had a great time. We didn't stay at the over the water report because of the absurd prices but still have a great time. I spent a week at Matangi Island in Fiji and can't recommend it high enough for someone wanting a romantic getaway. The...

    Easy Pacific diving for newbie?

Anywhere in Indonesia will be terrific. Finding a dive partner won't be a problem. If nothing else, you'll dive with the guide. Have a great time where ever you go.

    Nekton (Bad News)

These boats are so different from others and there are only a couple of mechanics that can work on them. They have to be brought in when available and they are expensive. These boats may be nice dive platforms but they are maintenance nightmares. Most of the systems are older and failure...
