Isla de cocos - live aboard - June or August?

I have to agree with diveasaurus - Cocos is rough for experienced divers. Get some more dives under your belt and then go to Cocos.

    Cocos Animal Seasons

September should be a great time for you to go. Generally July through October is the best time to go.

    Cocos trip review

I can tell you that just as recently as August 2009 I experienced the most life-changing hammerhead action at Cocos (and that was my 5th trip) - there are truly no words to describe what we experienced. On my most recent trip (I arrived the day the OP was leaving), there were not the schools...

    Skin bends/cutaneous DCS (imgs).

Thank you. On a recent trip to Cocos I developed something on my stomach and was concerned that it might be skin bends. The DM assured me it wasn't and it was gone the next morning. Now I know what to look for.

Feb/Mar 2011 - Palau or Cocos Island, your opinions???

As Mossman says, it's not the good time of year for Cocos. In my 6 trips, the best time to go to Cocos, to see the schooling hammerheads in particular, is August. I don't mind the 30+ hour crossing. I do hate flying in airplanes halfway around the world. There is just too much margin of...

    Any recent cocos reports?

Lemon - sorry I haven't been able to prepare a full report, but wanted to give you some information. Right now the water is very warm - 80s. The thermocline is very deep (100ft) if that. Due to the warm water temps, hammers are very few and far between. The DMs advised that there has been...

    Diving at Cocos Island.

ACT - I just returned from Cocos and you will be relieved to know that right now the currents are not as bad as in the past (of course that could change, and does change, all the time). Most all dives will be negative entry and like Vladimir said, most people who go to Cocos have no military...

    Any recent cocos reports?

Lemon - when are you going? I will be there next week (26 May). Will provide full report when we return. I have heard that the waters are cooling down again and the action is heating up.

Anyone have any thoughts Isla del Coco in Costa Rica?

Definitely my favorite dive spot. 6 times in 3 years - that should tell you something.

Choosing the best boat in Cocos

Mermoose I have been to Cocos quite a bit at different times of the year. The only time I wore anything greater than a 3 mil with hooded vest was in November. Then I wore a 5 mil with hooded vest. If you don't already have one, the hooded vest seemed to me my lifesaver. Not only does it keep...

Galapagos Scuba Diving Fatality - February 12, 2010 - Eloise Gale

I have been diving in Cocos on several occasions, sometimes with currents, sometimes without. I did a lot of research and really prepared myself mentally as I had never experienced strong currents before. Luckily my husband is my dive buddy so he and I were able to discuss and plan what to do...

Galapagos Scuba Diving Fatality - February 12, 2010 - Eloise Gale

I didn't read every post here, so I apologize if I am repeating something, but if you go to the original link to the blog, Denise - the dive buddy - does describe why they were separated in the comments to the blog. I do not want to repost her comment here in case there is some rule against...

    sharkiest dive spots

Potato Cod - Unless you get really, really cold, you definitely do not need a dry suit for Cocos. I always wear a 3mm with hood. Only one time did I need a 5mm. I have heard that Galapagos was somewhat colder, but even then, I think that might call for a 7mm, but not a dry suit. My...

    Where to dive... in September?

Having just been in Tonga last Sep - I would really be pushing for a return trip. I'm not sure how far that is for you, but for us it was 5 hours to LA then 11 hours to Tonga. I would do it in a heartbeat even if I only had 10 days. That is prime humpback season too!

    sharkiest dive spots

On my two experiences at Socorro, the mantas were the prevailing wildlife, not the sharks. I think Cocos or Galapagos (while not warm water) are the best bet for close-up shark encounters. You will see sharks at Roca Partida (Socorro) but you really have to go away from the rock to find them...

Peter Hughes Wind Dancer Cocos July 2010

I think at this time of year, Cocos "summer" conditions are very mild and calm. We were there in March last year and it was like glass. However, in July conditions will be very different. I totally agree with Matt215 - USH group is very safety conscious and all incidents that I have...

Cocos Island on Peter Hughes Wind Dancer...when did this happen?

I do not believe the PH boat is replacing the Aggressor. I believe the PH boat is "in addition to".

Cocos Island on Peter Hughes Wind Dancer...when did this happen?

Simon - with all due respect, people take what is said on this board very seriously. I have been to Cocos several times since 2007 and the waters there are not "Tiger Shark infested". I swim a lot when I am at Cocos. Perhaps this is your British humor but some people will take this seriously.

Peter Hughes Wind Dancer Cocos July 2010

coombsm - the only advice I would give you is to check out the other boats in the area. The Wind Dancer may be a nice boat, but I would check to see what type of experience their DMs have at Cocos. The other two companies offering trips to Cocos have very experienced dive guides which I...
